Default why is 'Gin and Tonic' the world leadr in Cocktails by popularity

Factaully I think it is - much like Microsoft Office is the best selling PC office software product.

The question is why??? - is it the complimentary nature of its two key ingredients or... something else?

It’s the lime.

I like it (Tanqueray and Tonic with lime) because it's not sweet. Too many cocktails are mixed with soda or fruit juice and are just too sweet for my taste.

It's zesty and refreshing with a nice balance of sweet vs bitter.

I keep a nice inventory of various Gins, tonics and juices to make various G&Ts

If you've not tried it - add a shot of pomegranate juice to your G&T, it's great.

I haven't heard of anyone drinking gin and tonic in forty years. So I'm not buying it

It might not taste it, but regular tonic water, like Schweppes and Canada Dry, is just as sweet as soda and fruit juice.
So, you’re not getting a break from sugar by drinking gin and tonics.
That said, I think Tanqueray and Tonic is a fine drink.

I'm sure it's the quinine that keeps 'em coming back for more.

I had a couple T&Ts just last night. I've discovered Q Tonic, which takes that excellent drink to a whole new level.

I drank nothing but G&T’s for years and always used Tanquery. I switched to vodka and tonic several years ago.

I still enjoy an occasional G&T at home but typically use Boodles or Hendricks now. Plenty of ice in a short glass, squeeze the lime over ice and drop in glass, add the gin and quickly add the tonic, pouring slowly to maintain carbonation. Do not stir. Simply push down on the ice a couple times to assure the mix and save the bubbles.

To me the herb flavor of a good gin, the sweetness of the tonic and the tartness of a well cut lime is a great combination.

I find them very refreshing but for some reason I generally only drink them in the summer.

By the way, I learned that they’re not just for breakfast anymore

According to the attached website, the Old Fashioned is the most popular cocktail in the world.

yep, same for me. hard to beat a TnT with a nice fresh slice of lime.

The only problem I have with tonic water is the "bad" stuff that is in most of the popular brands. You can however find some with none of that included, but it's a bit more expensive. (And IMHO better tasting..)

We've become very fond of two regional gins, diet tonic, and I think a lot more lime or pulp than you typically get in a bar.

Why? I don't know. Aroma for sure. Maybe because I like bitter things.

As much as we love some alcoholic beverages, we're often shocked to learn what lightweights we are. Very rare when my wife and I have a second alcoholic beverage.

I was tempted to post this quote on the vodka thread but resisted. A thread about gin came up and I couldn’t help myself.
