Update - OP here...I took the advice of using an epoxy wood filler and redrilling. I used kwik wood filler from my local hardware store. Pushed it into the hole with a toothpick, packed it in tight, and let it harden overnight. Carefully redrilled the next day using the strap button as a guide for the angle, and it came out perfect this time. I did use a felt washer under it as well. Thanks everyone for their responses.
