Default Lord Inchiquin (O'Carolan) - the garden sessions!

Hi all

This is the latest in my outdoors journey through O'Carolan's music on the guitar Inspired by Steve Baughman and his fantastic arrangements and playing of these pieces.

I was listening to two different versions while learning this - one was the original and which I had the tab for (slower) and the other was Steve's Celtic session rendition which is super fast and has some different embellishments. I settled somewhere in the middle of both.

I am really enjoying these 80/20 strings on this guitar - really have transformed the clarity and mids/bass that I used to find muddy.

This took me a lot of time to get recorded as for some reason I just kept making errors - maybe 50 or 60 takes over two days (and there are still errors in it) I also had to work hard to get the "MFT" (Middle finger thwack) to work!

I hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening.

Nice job Peter! The strings sound really good on the OM.

Wow, Peter!

That sounded wonderful! Lovely playing! And what a great sounding guitar!

I really like that little furry animal on the mics of your small recorder! It's nice to have company when you are out in your back yard making lovely music!

Still well played, the arrangement is beautiful but certainly difficult to interpret

Peter, I often watch steve Vai and am amazed how effortless he make everything look. I am sure though that even he does a LOT of retakes .
May I suggest practicing to play with your eyes closed and also in the first takes regardless of how many mistakes you may make follow through the recording so you sort of see the end of the tunnel.
Otherwise, great sound and recording. Your mic positioning is perfect in this recording. Smooth playing and sounds just wonderful.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the support and advice Farhad.

I have often tried to play with my eyes shut as a way of connecting with the music better and getting less wrapped up in where my fingers need to go next - it is however very hard work! I will persevere in this as you suggest.

I find that if I don't get a decent take within say, 10 attempts then I start to get frustrated as happened in this case, and not getting to the end in any form.

Thanks Phil.

Yes, Nanoweb 80/20 - I have to say I am seriously impressed with these strings. Quiet and great sounding..

I am sure that was not an easy task. A long and difficult piece to play.
You did it well.
I simpathise with the 60 takes though.. for some strange reason I play everything perfectly until I sit in front of the mic to record something!
Thank you for posting this. A nice piece of music well played on a great sounding guitar.

Thank you for the kind words - red light syndrome is real for sure and seems to afflict most of us who try to get things recorded. I find it very stressful as I look forward to getting a pice ready enough to record and then after an hour of trying I am really up tight if I have not got a good take.
