I love a good 12 string...I say get one, then give your kids crap for only playing 6 strings.

Don't have one, but every time I pick one up, "You've got to hide your love away" comes out.

I just don’t much like smileys . I find that quote useful when someone starts complaining about the youth today. Which is to say, quite often.

I have a Takamine GJ72ce.
I’m stalking an Alvarez AJ80S in 12-string.
It’s a niche guitar for me. But I play it a lot when I have the house to myself. It’s LOUD.
But I’ve had a 12 around for the last five years. Don’t know how I did without it.

Also, a used Takamine EF23 is basically the same guitar as the GJ72. And they can be had around $400.

I'm a "younger" muso (mid 30s) and I think 12 strings are cool.. Totally different sound so worth having IMHO...

My recommendation would be a used Guild if you can find one. Honorable mention for Alvarez (I have an Artist series 12 that is excellent) and there's a decent Taylor 12 in their line up that may convert your kids..

I get into whatever my kids get into so I can be with them. It worked because they are smart, both have over a 3.5 GPA on in high school and one in college. We hang out everyday and so stuff together.

I turned my ManCave into a studio called the JamCave. We are into cars, so we are constantly going to races.

Thanks for the suggestions. Seems the Guild F-1512E.

Yes. Part of a quote, anyway. The rest is: "They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

Tell them to get off of your lawn.. There is a used Taylor GA12 in the classifieds. That's great 12 string and it's in your price range I believe. Also check out Breedlove.

Not mine. Dude, you should add “Get off my lawn” to your signature.

My oldest son bought a 1963 Gibson ES125 at a Guitar Center back in 2016 for $1200. That was a steal, it's a fantastic guitar.

So now my son is in the market for an acoustic. He's not into Martin, likes Taylor more and we've owned a few Breedlove's in the past. The search continues.....

While looking I always flock to find a 12-string in tune (very rare). I play all the 12-string songs to bother them, Boston's "More Than A Feeling", Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive", I mean come on, that's the test.

So finally I tell them now I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 12-String when I find one that works for me. Their answer "don't be that guy". Do only older guys play 12-string guitars? The younger generation doesn't play these? I'm in my late 40's....are 12-string guitars mid-life crisis guitars? Does the younger generation think 12-strings are gimmicky?

On the flip side, if you're reading this also leave me some recommendations with price range $800-$1000.
You might want to mention to your son that you now know something at 48 that you didn't know at 17 (or whatever his age is)...

Although I'm an "old guy" and seriously into 12-strings, I don't think it's just an old guy thing. I mean, show them this video. Go out to minute 4:12....

There you go. A big, jumbo 12 with lots of sound. It doesn't have the bass that the Guilds do, but it costs about 1/3 as much. I recorded this fingerpicked piece with my Tak GJ72CE (now long gone)....

That is a good recommendation. I haven't played one, but I'm betting those are quite good!

Best of luck in your search, JP Jr! Whatever you decide, you don't have to limit yourself to so-called "12-string songs" (as that Agnesi vid playing a Led Zep piece demonstrates). As I always say, play whatever sounds good!

This one.

I took the ad down after a day because the local dealer talked me into consigning it a few months ago, but it is still in his store. I am going to take it back and re-list it for $600
https://www.stringinstruments.com/p-...lus-w-hsc.aspx
He sold it to me new in 2006 for $1,028.

Life without a 12-string is like... only half as good. I mean play Give a Little Bit or Space Oddity on a 6 and it’s just lacking. Get the 12 and show them that despite what they believe they don’t yet know everything.

When my grandsons tell me what they want I tell them they are kids - nobody cares what they want.

A buddy who has a large guitar collection got a new Taylor in your price range and uses it all the time on gigs. He still likes it.
