Default Turnstone Guitars Build

Hi Everyone:

I had been looking at several guitars, Lowdens and an Avalon, that were made from Bog Oak. Most of them were too large and did not have the appointments that I wanted. Thats when I discovered Rosie Heydenrych of Turnstone guitars. Rosie is very easy to work and I like her art and style. The guitar we have planned is what she calls her all english woods guitar made from woods entirely from England. The specs are:

Model: TM (about the size of an OM)
Back and sides: Bog Oak
Top: English Monterey Cypress
Fretboard: Bog Oak
Neck: Flamed Sycamore
Sound port and arm bevel.

I am no stranger to Oak guitars, Hans Brentrup built one for me in 2011. This one will a little less traditional.

Interesting set of tonewoods. I have never heard of English Monterey Cypress, let alone as a top wood. It sure looks nice. Cool rosette design and back inlay.

To follow up, I cannot seem to find any mention of "English" Monterey Cypress on google. Lots of info on Monterey Cypress, but no English MC.

I played a lovely Turnstone 00 I believe in Cedar/Yew b and s with Walnut neck recently and I have to say it was one of the most endearing guitars I've heard in a while. the Yew was pretty knotty looking but hey who cares when you get such a unique sound. believe it was one of her early ones. Wish I had the coin to get one myself! Maybe there's somewhere to find one secondhand.

I don’t think that the monterey cypress tree is native to England but is grown in there. Apparently, it thrives in the climate and gets very large.. Maybe Rosie will weigh in on this one.

I imagine she will. Rosie is a sponsor here, so I hope everybody will check out her beautiful guitars. I look forward to watching the progress on this one.

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd come in on the question about the Cypress as I may be able to help.

Monterey Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa) is originally native to California, but it was introduced to the UK many years ago (middle of the last century I believe) and grows very happily here too.

Alongside traditional tonewoods, using English grown timber to build guitars has become a bit of an obsession for me, one that started early on in my luthiery journey. I set out to find English grown timber for every wooden part of the guitar and I’m really pleased to say that I’ve built a number of “all English” guitars called E-Series guitars.

While developing my E-Series approach I used English grown Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata) a number of times quite successfully and when visiting my “local woods” tonewood supplier to get some more, he told me he had sourced some Monterey Cypress if I wanted to try it. Try it I did and wow, I loved it!

I used the Cypress on an English Cherry backed TM model and loved the aesthetic plus tonally, it was a bit brighter than the Cedar so gave me an alternate English option to offer. I have since found tonewoods like Yew (Taxus Baccata) and Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus Libani) which are great for soundboards too.

Sorry that got a bit long! But I hope that’s cleared it up a bit for those interested.

I’m more than happy to jump back in if you want to know more!

Bye for now,
Rosie

Thanks, Rosie. So glad we can follow a build thread of one of your fine guitars.

Best,
Jayne

I may just have tried your guitar over the weekend. If it is yours, you're one lucky guy! It's haunting me now! Rosie had it at a gathering in Halifax and she spoke about it on video during the interview she graciously agreed to record with me for my podcast. I'll try and get it up soon. We got some video of Ian Brown's playing some fingerstyle on it too.

i know Rosie had a show last weekend but I don’t think mine has a neck on it yet. She did borrow back a couple from owners for the show. I am happy to hear your feedback. I will watch for the demos.

Ah, maybe that it was it then. It was a TG in bog oak and western red cedar, so you're right, it wasn't your guitar. Sorry for the confusion. But boy oh boy was that a nice guitar! You're gonna be a happy camper when yours comes along. Rosie's work is exquisite.
