Default hey joe...

I'm in a 5 piece blues/rock band in Denver and we always close our 2nd or 3rd set with a killer performance of the Hendrix version of "Hey Joe" and we add a very powerful dual guitar sequence. Kind of a southern rock way of using the ol' two guitar lead thing. It builds into a strong ending and we always get a loud resounding reaction from the audience. Our covers of "Sultans of Swing", "Boom Boom" (John Lee Hooker) and "Middle of the Road" also receive an excellent reaction. Two of my personal favorites however are "I'm Tired" by Savoy Brown ( I just have always liked the song and people seem to really get into the groove on it) and I (if I must say so myself) do a pretty mean cover of "Room to Move" by John Mayall. I must admit, there are a couple of tunes that I dread seeing crawl up the set list however, we play these just because people want to hear them, i.e. "Heart of Gold" (boring), "The One I Love" (equally Boring) and "Wicked Game" (a real sleeper to play, but I do like Chris Issak).

People seem to like it when I play a song you would not expect a girl to play-

like Pinball Wizard, or Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull - or any Led Zeppelin

Ninjato, I love (I play) that Arlo tune too (Coming into Los Angeles)

Chicago Sandy, I REALLY wanna hear you play Joan Osborne ona dulcimer.. which did you say you played? St Theresa? That'd ne cool!

Back in the early 70s we got the best response from The Guess Who's "No Time."

I do a Mister Rogers medley...

in full Bob Dylan vowel-syllable-stretching Blonde on Blonde-era voice....

my boy likes it...

but I can't talk for three days after...

I rarely do gigs nowadays but not long ago I had the best cheers when I plaY:

"More Than words"- Extremes (I guess the intro to the song is catchy!)

"Fast Car"- Tracy Chapman ( I don't know but maybe because it is originally sung by a woman, people get a kick when a man sings it. And again, there is something to the intro of this song). I took me a loooong while before I can play this in public. This song is so synchopated its crazy!

Stealin' - Memphis Jug Band

Rub Alchohol Blues - trad

Last time my band, The Downtown County Band, did Rub Alchohol Blues was at a Christams party and it really got the people's attention.... We do Stealin and people will ask us to do it again, every time. We don't. . . . but sometimes its tempting.

Two songs I've learned due to requests were Superman - Five for Fighting and Hero - Enrique Iglesias. The cafe folk like the songs more than I do but they keep requesting them. The wife says if I learn one of the Hero verses in Spannish I'll get better tips from the ladies.

Folks seem to like when I play 'Foxglove' by Bruce Cockburn. It's always been one of my faves...

Sorry, I got off topic as I was reading through the thread. I guess the song that stuns an acoustic crowd when I play it is Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull. I only play it about once a year but it always gets a big response.

I play it as below. I don't have a guitar handy right now so I'll edit later if necessary. First, both E's tune down to D's (another great one in this tuning is The End by the Doors).

Intro, strum by strum:

xxx555
xxx777
xxx777
xxx777
xxx777

x32xxx
x22xxx
x0xxxx
33xxxx
55xxxx

Repeat until established, then chords/words as follows:

000230 I wanna live with a
x02010 Cinnamon Girl
x32010 I could be happy the
550000 rest of my life with a

00xxxx Cinn
33xxxx a
55xxxx mon
x35xxx girl
x57xxx
x57xxx

x320xx
x300xx
x320xx
x02010

Repeat from the top for verses 2 and 3

Bridge:
x55333 Ma, send me money
x55333 now, I need to make it some
x55333 how, I need another
x77555 chance, to show your baby loves to
x77655 dance, yeah, yeah,YEAH....

Solo (just play the verse LOUD)

"Now you're messin' with a Son of a B****" - Nazareth

Is that the real title? You know the one. Gotta save it for the last song of the last drunken set, cause the vocal chords take a real beating.
