Try doing any bends with the "light fretting technique"
A lot of this has to do with what kind of music you play and such. Some styles require pressing fairly hard to get the desired results. I fret pretty hard when I play the blues, not so much when strumming chords in ballads etc.
IMHO, how much pressure one apples to fret a note depends on a lot of different circumstances and there is no specific method that applies to everything.
