I'm not as familiar with Martin Simpson's catalog as some of you but anything I've ever seen him play has been on an acoustic. Does he have some tunes he's recorded on electric?

The tracks I am thinking of are off his Vagrant Stanzas album. Specifically Shepherds Rejoice and Blue Eyed Boston Boy.
You all are probably right on him playing through that Magnatone amp. Howard your clip sounded great, super nice tone. My two amps, a Tweed Deluxe and a Dr Z Carmen Ghia have more mids than a silverface fender. Ill keep working to get a tone I like and perhaps post something soon. I recently got a ribbon mic, one of those affordable Cascade Fatheads. On initial tests it sounds pretty good on my guitar amp.

Unless I'm in the studio with my engineer/producer at the beck & call & try this, etc, it's all about quick & easy when I sit down in front of my iPhone. Sometimes I get lucky! Don't forget that the vibrato on a Magnatone changes the pitch slightly, while a Fender changes amplitude......If I'm getting my terms correctly. It may also help to give a little space between the mic & the amp. HE

I'm not an engineer. I don't actually like the sound of that particular recording at all. Too much tremolo/phase/reverb and/or whatever. Obviously, just my preference.
