Stupid TV price
We decided just the other night that a new, larger tv for our living room would be nice. We primarily watch tv in our family room, but two of our grandsons use the tv in the living room to play their video games. The living tv is a 32" Samsung which is a few years old. It's also getting hard for me to read the guide from the couch (yeah, I know, glasses, lol) .
Anyway we were at PC Richards looking at laptaps for grandson #2's upcoming birthday and decided to take a peek at the TV's they had. NOS (2018 model) Samsung 43" smart tv, $279. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.

Sure, you can find 60" 4k's for around that price if you look around.

Yeh, I know what you mean. My (relatively expensive at the time) Sony flatscreen gave up the ghost last year and I went TV shopping. My living room is small so I wasn't looking for a large (by today's standards) flatscreen. I checked out the offerings at Walmart online to ascertain reviews, prices etc. I learned a few things in my search. A. Today's televisions are relatively inexpensive. B. Forget what you thought you knew about going with a name brand because the names have all changed. Long story short, I got a 32" Vizio which has a great picture (better than my girlfriend's $1000 Sony) for about $75.
Walmart uses TVs as "loss leaders" meaning they're priced low to bring customers into the store. So right off the bat, it was priced relatively low. Then there was a $25 discount - I think they call it a "rollback." Then there was another $75 off of that if I applied for and used a Walmart credit card. In short, it's been a great television, and I concur with the OP. Televisions are crazy cheap....

Wow, that's great, TB. Congrats. Samsung makes excellent TVs.
I just upgraded this summer to a Sony 65" OLED with a staggering price tag... in the other direction. Ugh... but it looks incredible. Hope you enjoy. |

Ying and yang....whatever you save on new TVs you spend ten fold on monthly cable and streaming services!

Oh yeah, they had a couple of 55" that were at or under $400, but that size is too big for where the tv is in the living room.

Prices have dropped a great deal, at least for everything but the latest and greatest with all the super resolution and such.
We bought our present 53 TV (a Sharp) maybe 8-10 years ago and it was a bit over a thousand bucks. I see current 56 models going for as little as 3-4 hundred. |

Anybody else hoping their current TV stops working so they can get a new, bigger one?

It's amazing how cheap televisions have gotten. I've currently got a 32" in my bedroom that I use with a Firestick. I think I'm going to replace it with something bigger and start using the 32" as a computer monitor...

65-inch 4K Smart TV wall hanger I might have one fully dedicated hour watching has been in our living room for almost 3 years. It was $1200.00 (installed) from Best Buy. That's quite a payday for someone ($1,200.00/hour). My wife watches Shark Tank and cooking shows. I've decided to get one of those large posters of a vintage aviation scene, frame it and hang it over the thing on a wall-mounted top edge flip-up hinge. Otherwise, it looks like a large black hole in my wall.

Congratulations on the new TV. Those sizes are amazingly inexpensive. I have been disappointed as I'm trying to get an outdoor TV for my deck space and those things are ridiculously expensive. I understand there's more involved in sealing them but it's exponentially more expensive. It's been a little frustrating.

LED TV's are much easier to make than CRT TVs, so they should be, cheaper when adjusted for inflation.

Ill probably be publically ridiculed for this, but here goes:
I have a 53 inch Sony, that has great inboard sound incidentally, that I bought new 17 years ago.. for just under $5000. My Son gives me crap about it, urging me to upgrade to this or that. He gave me a Blu-Ray player that won't connect to it, so I watch DVD's with my old player, much to his dismay. And yes, I can (and do) still watch VCR tapes from the library. He thinks I'm crazy. But.. and here's the really strange part.. I estimate it has maybe 350/400 hours on it in 17 years. I don't watch TV. Maybe a movie every month or two.. maybe. Yes, I could update/upgrade for $500 and get A LOT MORE TV, but what for? Okay, I'll go crawl back in my cave and read a book by firelight.. yes, a real book, with paper pages. |
