Where does the string break?

this could help to narrow down the problem specific to your situation

If it's @ the string post - as stated above - windings lotsa windings spreads the load (break) point round the post, the concave shape also is designed to direct the winding string into the center of the concavity thus each wind creates friction against the previous one preventing string slippage - think of the physics of a capstan.
