It does sound like string slippage could be an issue here. If you didn't wrap too many wounds on each post, you need to make sure you have created a string "lock". Note the way my low E string is locked on the post to prevent slip (below).

Thanks to everyone that posted in reply! I'm going to try out everyone's advice and see if I can't get the sucker in tune. I really want to get into practicing soon...always been a dream of mine to play a full song on the guitar!
