Yes, Americana/Roots deserves its place in the genre panoply.

Nanci Griffith shrugged off labels and called her music Folkabilly.

The problem is that most release platforms don't let you name your own style. People working with major labels can do whatever marketing they want, naming their own style if they choose. If you're releasing on Spotify or Apple Music, etc, thru a distribution service (CD Baby, Distrokid, and so on), you get a drop down list to pick from. It's quite short, and pretty generic.

Exactly! That's what I was trying to say and you described it much better than I did. I have no problem naming it Americana, but when I have to choose from a drop-down list and Americana is not listed, I have to figure it out.

We live in an age of drop-down menus written by the unimaginative. Ever try to answer a survey?

Thanks everyone for your insight. I really don't like the idea of having to categorize my music but I know it's useful for people looking for a specific sound.

Well, I've been inspired by this thread to have a genre reveal party on Soundcloud. "Vaguely xxx" and "Acoustic instrumental" are very useful terms.

I don't figure out my genre...

I'm as eclectic as heck.

Me, too. How do I characterize a repertoire that includes "Darcy Farrow", "On And On", Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"?

Is there a "Do You Like Good Music" genre?

Just use the pull down menu and select "Eclectic".

According to Arthur Conley, the correct genre for that is "sweet soul music."

Great question! You might get some good advice if you try asking the Eagles, Mark Knopfler, Jason Isbell, or Kacey Musgraves. Too late to ask John Prine or Graham Parsons. Rest assured, you're in good company if you can't figure that out!

Not sure it matters as much anymore, since we don't "tune in" specific stations dedicated to specific genres. Nowadays, it Wizards, smart lists, etc...that cross all boundaries. But to your point, is "alt-country" a reasonable option?
