Thread reopened. I'm not sure why the NO POLITICS rule is difficult for some to understand. The vast majority helps us very well and we appreciate that.

If someone makes a political post, please report it with the little, red triangle in the top right instead of responding to it. Thank you. Please continue... within the rules.

Florida and Texas are perhaps the most concerning at the moment, as some big population centers are getting hit hard.

California is not doing that well either. In Ventura County where I live, the positive tests and hospitalization numbers both appear to have been spiking over the last two weeks. We are still in relatively good shape at the moment, but Los Angeles is in trouble.

I still wish someone would explain to me how “reported cases numbers” are arrived at.
I still don’t know how they are coming up with these numbers.

Pretty sure they are arrived at through positive tests at hospitals and testing centers.

I’ve had a simple question for a while! Why don’t they give a break down of the numbers? Asymptomatic, ICU, hospitalized, etc. Would this not give a clearer picture? Just my .02

They do and it's pretty easy to find:

A new site managed by the Harvard Global Health Institute went live this week. It simplifies much of the data that everyone is arguing about and classifies each US county with red, orange, yellow and green color codes. The colors denote where cases are increasing, flat or decreasing. The statistics are all normalized per 100,000 population. Here’s the link:https://globalepidemics.org/key-metr...d-suppression/

Day after day, all I see our local media reporting is the scorecard of “total # of new cases” and “total # of deaths”. No context, no supporting data, no trend analysis. Just raw numbers. A little more introspection would really go a long way in helping Joe Public digest what’s happening.

In this market, at least, we have not been well-served by our journalists.

A lot of what you are looking for is within this reference link. Some data is spoon fed but other data is found by chasing down reference links associated with the data that’s reported. Pick a state, or a county or a city...

Look again. ICU is there.

Asymptomatic is probably hard to determine though. I imagine most tests are for symptomatic patients.

Do you think the average person can distill numbers like that? Highly doubtful and it would make it too complicated for the average person.

Again, numbers and trends can be found easily.

I like how the data is presented.

I’m honestly not sure. I’d like to think so, but I don’t presume to speak for everyone, and I’m certainly not capable of determining what the ‘average’ person might or might not be able to comprehend.

Numbers and trends are easy to find. I guess the point I was trying to make is that they should thus be equally easy to report on, but the raw totals that are being trotted out daily by the media bely that notion, and suggest that ‘they’ don’t think that ‘we’ are smart enough to understand what we’re being told.

And that, in large part, is why I tend to sympathize with those who feel more than a little confused by the narrative.

Death rates are rising in Arizona....the lower death rates in recent weeks has been one of the few bright spots on otherwise discouraging (nearing catastrophic) statistics.
