Default Variations on a theme by Carl Miner

I have been intrigued with the haunting melody from Carl Miner's demo video of a Huss & Dalton OM: https://youtu.be/eDeGtJY1g3A

I was so intrigued that I sat down at the computer with a guitar to figure out how Carl was playing this piece. As I experimented around with this, I first used my Collings OM1ADB (DB means deep body or dread-depth body) because it is closest in sound to the Huss & Dalton OM that Carl was playing in the demo.

After that I tried other guitars I own and found that it was fun to compare the sounds. In this video I compare my Collings OM1ADB, my Santa Cruz OM/PW, and an Olson SJ. I hope you enjoy both this beautiful melody and the comparison of the guitars.

By the way, Carl Miner is a world-class studio musician and flat picker, while I am just an amateur, playing this song with my fingers. I do not compare my playing to Carl Miner's, I just wanted to borrow his beautiful theme. Also, I did not try to duplicate Carl's version of this song, but rather used his thematic ideas for my own version.

Thanks for listening and hats off to Carl Miner and his terrific demos for TNAG.

- Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Such a beautiful melody by Carl Miner - your interpretation is great! Lots of fun to compare three world class guitars as well, each with their own unique sound. Very nicely done!

Lovely comparison Glenn! Thanks! I think that for this piece the deep bodied OM did it for me. I love that tone!

Thanks Brian!

I appreciate your thoughts and comments! That piece does sound good on the Collings deep bodied OM, very clear. I am really plucking the strings pretty hard to get the melody to stand out yet that Adi top just has all the headroom in the world.

I like the sound of the other two guitars, as well, but you would expect that reaction since I had already bought the guitars!

Thanks for taking time to comment here -- much appreciated!

Just beautiful, Glenn!
I have to admit, my ears did a slight uptick as the Olson cut in! But, they all sound spectacular in your capable hands!

Hi Fred!

Thank you for listening and for your comments!

Regarding the Olson, I, too, had the same reaction when it comes in. To me that Olson sounds so full and kind of velvetty in terms of attack. It really is a great sound from my perspective.

I hope things are going well for you Fred! Enjoy the spring!

Well, that is indeed a beautiful short piece. Your playing is excellent too Glenn. I wouldn't like to say which is my favourite sounding guitar because they all sound good to me.

You certainly have some lovely guitars in your collection

Hi Glenn

That's a beautiful piece of music for sure and you really do it justice playing with your fingers.

I have to admit that I think the Olsen really suits it well - warm and fat tones whilst still cutting through with its trebles.

Lovely :-)
