I like my 552ce (now superseded by a V-braced model) - cedar top, 12 fret neck.

I’m frustrated that the only option for Taylor 12 strings is one dread (150e), one grand auditorium (254ce) and the rest are grand concert (x22ce.)
Bring back the x56 and x58s. I’d really like a 258.

Taylor 12 String
Not totally sure, but I don't think they made xy8 Grand Orchestra 12 strings in the 200 series. So if you want one and happen to come across one, grab it. Don .

I have always maintained that the best Taylor 12s have been the GS bodied guits, and of course the old jumbo. I haven't played a GO in 12, but havee played the 6s, so can't help but think that has to be a full, rich tone in a 12. But I agree, their 12s are the best playing in the biz and deserve the GS and GO size to fully exploit the sonic richness that is a 12 string. Edward |

If you are intent on a 150e, then try to find one with a rosewood b&s (a GC special, I believe). I A'Bed one against their usual walnut 150e and thought the rosewood was far superior in tone.
If you are not intent on a 150e, I'd suggest checking out a Seagull for several C notes less. I really liked their spruce/walnut iSys 12-string when I tried one out - thought it superior to both a Seagull Coastline cedar S12 and Yamaha FG820-12 the store also had.

They never made one. I wish they did.

Exactly. I play everything on my 12-strings.

I played one in a store recently, I think it was a 562 or something, in a very dark finish. As a jumbo Guild 12-string player, I must have had that Taylor in my hands for no more than 20 seconds. Such a wee sound, in comparison. Yeah, I do not understand the appeal of a 12-string in such a small body shape. You need some guts with a 12-string, IMO.

As an owner of a Taylor 856, I wanted to also like their concert sized 12 fret models, but found that I didn't. I did not find them easier to play, either.

Well, I for one DO like the GC body in a 12-string. I got a Taylor 362ce a couple of months ago and I can't put the thing down. It puts a completely new spin on everything I play on it, and it's perfectly constructed, as you'd expect. People seem to be comparing it, sonically, with the typical Jumbo or Dread-sized 12s, and that's not what it is - you only have to look at it to realize that. It does not have the power or volume or rich bass of a Guild jumbo, for example - how could it? What it does have is completely its own thing; it doesn't sound like any 12 I've ever played, and I love how it gives songs I already play a different energy. I am having tons of fun with it, and it will reside happily with my Martin, Gibson, and Guild acoustics.
BTW, I'm no Taylor fanboy - this is the only Taylor I've ever had. |
