Jeff, your username is a great tribute to one of the all time greats. I too saw that the Say Hey Kid is 90.

I saw that too! He was one of my heroes growing up. Remarkable ballplayer. Long live Willie!

It is the Japanese word for "unknown". I have been using it since before there were websites. As someone commented earlier, I rarely mention my actual name on the internet.

It was the name of my beloved Fumei. I did not want to call him Smoke (because he was grey...duh). So I called him "smoke" in French - fume.

It has been almost 10 years since the coyotes ate him. I still weep.

This is one of my favorite threads and I just learned a meaning for "fumei" that I'd never been introduced to before.
The way I learned the word and have always used it has been with the meaning "amibguous". A really direct word for you as "unknown", "anonymous" or "name not given" would be the literal "mumei".

I was just finished makeup school and put my name on the forum, David, but mis-spelled it as Davis. I liked it. I didn't like my last name, it did not seem very fashion or entertainment industry forward, but Webb, that had a ring. Overnite I became Davis Webb, and started my career as a theatre makeup artist. The name stuck and I love it.

I use my legal name in business now, but in the makeup industry, they still know me.

And when I did country music, Davis Webb had the same solid punch.

I think its a keeper.

That's a great story, David. Very interesting profession too.

It’s my main instrument - the 12-string version of the Chapman Stick.

As a tiny child and later as a cadet at the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, I was steeped in all that “moonlight and magnolias” Old South crap, and as an 18 year old made a conscious and deliberate decision to turn my back on it.

Bless your heart.

You're still one of the head-dudes around here, though...

You know, every 'star' makeup artist has an invented name. One huge artist, very well known, Anthony Gordon...well thats not his real name. He's Jewish for one, and not many Jews named Gordon....(I know cuz I am)....

As time went on I met other makeup artists that are all famous

Scott Barnes
Billy Beauty

I realized, hey, to be an entertainer, you gotta have an image. And it was fun!

My GO master told me decades ago - I do not speak Japanese. A web search returns fumei as:

unknown
indistinct
ambiguous
unidentified

A web search returns mumei as:

unsigned
nameless
unnamed
anonymous
namelessness

Not exactly clear on the difference. So....what the heck do I know. I started using it in the early 80's. I have not heard of mumei until now. Too late to change my handle. I think I like fumei better because of the connection with fume, although they do not sound alike whatsoever.

It's a nickname bestowed upon me as a teenager by a good friend of my parents...the guys I picked with liked it (thought it sounded like a blues musician) and it's kinda stuck...

It's my stage name - double pun that no one ever gets. A shame to waste it on folks who know nothing about chickens.
