This is one of the reasons I love to watch the masters build. Even this little inlay serves a purpose and is on the inside of the box and yet is done so neatly and cleanly even though it will likely never be seen once closed up.

Totally agree. And I forgot to mention, also a nice shot of that bevel!

Thanks for the kind words. Some strides forward on Steve's SJ:
IMG_2102.jpg That pic ^ shows the completed top. Braces carved and sanded smooth, and the signatures with date penciled in. Which leads to this: IMG_2103.jpg We have a closed, curvilinear box! Thanks for watching, Steve |

And...out of the mold, with some initial sanding done.
This LS redwood is quite nice: IMG_2117.jpg Thanks, Steve |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. The silking really popped after some 220 sanding, and it will be most interesting to see how the finish enhances the appearance. Waiting for the unveiling will be hard on this one.

Boy, this is getting exciting now that the grain is starting to pop. For those that haven’t (yet) done a custom build where you follow the wood through the process, it’s amazing how things come together visually - you choose unfinished sets and try to visualize how the different woods will look together, but its only until you get to this stage that you really get a sense of it. Outstanding Steve!

I am such a sucker for redwood, I have no idea why I don't own one. This is really looking lovely and should be stunning when finished.

One of the fun/challenging parts of design work is trying to make all parts work together. Of course an Ebony fretboard goes with everything, but what to do for the headplate? What part of the guitar to match?...compliment?
So we kicked around a number of possibilities, with plenty of pics of this 'n that. We settled on this Koa headplate, because it matches the rosette so well: IMG_2118.jpg Once that was chosen, the plate was glued to the prepped headstock: IMG_2123.jpg And then once dry and cured, the clamps come off, and the shape is cut into the head. Steve, we're starting to see a guitar neck shaping up: IMG_2125.jpg SK |

Nice choice gents. Lovely looking bit of wood for the head plate, which as you point out, matches the rosette very nicely from the picture. Both woods have that nice “shimmer” quality that I also recognize from some Aussie Blackwood used more commonly down this way.

Wow! Stunning! You guys are really exceeding my expectations here. For those that are following this and haven’t had a Kinnaird build - Steve keeps you involved every step of the way. We kicked around a bunch of ideas on the headstock - when Steve showed me this Koa, and it matched the rosette perfectly (including the dark accent lines) - well, it was an easy decision at that point. Even though I’m making choices as we go with Steve and Ryan’s input and guidance, I still get excited for these new update posts to see it come together.
