Default Thought-provoking film: “Civil War”

I just got back from an afternoon matinee showing of “Civil War.” It’s an excellent film, thought-provoking and well made.

It’s violent, though it’s not torture porn like a lot of violent films are. The violence in it is sudden and unpredictable, and all the more shocking because of it.

Seems like pretty much the last premise for a movie the United States of America needs in 2024.

Agreed. Ever notice how these topics seem to bloom at opportune times?

As a Brit, I would tend to agree. Maybe I watch too much on YouTube.

There was much violence in children's stories back in the day. And death. It was quite common.

As an American, I think we are not nearly as divided as (any) media may portray us...a little on the nutty side perhaps...but I think you will find that the actual number of us who would even consider taking up weapons to harm each other over politics is microscopic.

Just remember that American democracy (I know we can argue whether it is really a republic...) was, and is still, considered an experiment. We have always had some sort of struggle going on and many people, despite, living in peace. Those are not newsworthy so we won't hear about them.

As for the Civil War, it is remarkable that we came out of it as a nation and carried on. Plenty of stuff to work through, but we survived and still do today.

I think we will now too.

Thanks for sharing this observation. You could say this about some David Cronenberg films, too, which I love very much.
Going to see "Civil War" tomorrow night (original, undubbed sound), one day before its official start over here in Germany on thursday. From the trailers I have watched, expectations are high.

I haven't seen it but read a review of it. Apparently the storyline is not what one would expect in today's political climate. And a female "war photographer" is apparently the lead character.

Right on the money.
Rather than talk conflict I think we need to breath deeply and take a good walk.

And yet history shows that it doesn't take many with weapons to put down the many without.

Just like the divide, are we inadvertently hijacking the thread?

Please limit any discussion to talking about the film itself. As you all know, political discussions are not allowed on AGF.

Thanks,

Rick

It is a political film.

Comments like "Wow, great cinematography" or "The costume designer sure did a good job" would be laughably irrelevant.

I think the thread should be locked.
