Default Sub $60 voice recorder?

My birthday is coming up soon. My sisters are probably aching on wanting to know what I want. I don't want to ask too much.

So a $60 or less voice recorder will do. I don't need it to be fancy quality in sound. Just something that I can record myself singing and then pressing a simple button to hear what I sound like.

Please leave thoughts below, thanks!

A smartphone will work perfectly well for that. You probably won't find many voice recorders at your price point that will sound much better (tho someone may prove me wrong).

The weak point of most inexpensive recorders is the mic, so maybe get a bit better mic that will plug in to your phone, to give better results in whatever recording app you choose. Something like the Rode VideoMic-ME or iRig Mic are right at that $60 mark.

If you have a recent smartphone from any major brand (Apple, Samsung, et al) that is going to record as well as any $60 recorder. A friend records on a cheap Android phone - I don't know what it is, but I know he's cheap - and it does a fine job.

Maybe you could get an online [Zoom] voice lesson or 2 for the money, assuming you have a decent phone?

Assuming you do have a smartphone, I realize a Zoom iQ6 at Sweetwater for $99 is above your budget, but it might be a good option if you can raise the extra $.

Oh this is quite cool! How’s the recording quality though?

I own a Zoom H1 and just posted about using it for home recordings.
Look at my thread and consider getting one of these units.
They are around $99.99 at Guitar Center.

I previously owned a Zoom H1, if that's anything like your Zoon.

I sold it and purchased a Tascam DR-05 which is similarly priced and a much higher quality recorder IMHO.

Thanks bunch! I did some research and wanted one with playback capability. I also wanted not to break the bank. I decided to get this one,

It might be ok, but I got one of these cheap ones about a year ago out of curiosity mostly and it's just ok. For the price, it works, but the sound quality is far from any name brand like Tascam.

I had a Tascam DR-05 I got on sale for $50 that I used for about 10 years and it was great. Recently upgraded to the DR-40 now though.

If you go to used on this page, there's used (like new) DR-05 for $61:

Thanks guys. I just ordered a DR-05x with my early bday money. A bit more expensive than what I had originally planned.

Good choice.

Combine it with a Creative Movo 20 and you'll have yourself a very nice basic recording rig:

Absolutely. Your phone is as capable a recorder as any cheap standalone, so a good USB mic would be the perfect gift. The add-ons for that (if you have more relatives) would be a mic stand with a boom and a gizmo that clips onto the mic stand to hold the phone.
