May I ask what guitar you used? I'm guessing a flat top acoustic. |

Good job Jeff. The audience smile factor was high on this one so obviously an awesome start. Very impressive what your Zoom recorder did on this performance.

Well, here's what I've been up to. I wanted this to sound like you were just hanging out with me and I was playing guitar...and I think I got in the ballpark, thanks to a lot of the really great advice I got here. So let me know what you think.

Sounds great!
I did not hear the first version and I have no complaints about the reverb use in this one. Here's my (nitpicking) thoughts: Mic placement: you're in the room, so you're best placed to know how faithfully reproduced the guitar sound is, but from my perspective I like the sound I'm hearing - sounds like a 000 to me! EQ/sound: again, you're the boss, but it sounded good to me. Love that you can (through great playing!) capture this kinda tone with an H4n and audacity! Room noise: I'm getting a fair amount of background noise from the room, which at the very start is nice and grounds my ears to the idea of 'informal guy in room with me' - but after you get into the tune, I don't like the hiss/hum that surrounds the playing. 'mastering': The levels are a little low when compared with other youtube videos - I'm sure others can chime in on headroom and what LUFS to hit, but I had to crank up the volume after I started listening (then turn it down when I went back to other youtube music). Again, great playing and sound - thanks for sharing! Tom ps - regarding the background noise, I am not talking about the incidental guitar-playing sounds (clicks and string squeaks and even human-breaths) - I'm always happy to hear those musician-generated accompaniments. |

Also - I've just remembered something that relates to that room noise comment I made.
I have an H4n somewhere around, I used to use it for voice work. But I stopped using it because the self-noise was loud enough to annoy me. I think I managed to get it a little better by plugging in an external mic, but it was still there, needing to be removed later. I really liked the H4n for recording btw, so useful to just get out the little device. But in the end, I was running a mic into it through a little mixing desk for eq on the fly (when I wasn't using a DAW), so much less portable and more effort to set up. |
