Default Holy Moly - Explosion in Beirut

They think it was a fireworks depot, but some also think it's terrorism:

No one is yet to comment on this developing story? It's pretty crazy and scary.

It's a shocking explosion. Right now, I'm hearing it was a chemical explosion after a fire started. At least 50 dead and 3,000 injured... those numbers will go up. I've never seen an explosion like that.

Insane. Here's some video of the aftermath. Shocking.

Hard to imagine that with that much destruction, "fireworks" explains it, but we'll see.

Story I have read said "highly explosive materials" not fireworks. I'm reading into this that it was probably a storehouse for confiscated munitions, etc. which would certainly account for the magnitude of the blast better than fireworks.

The billowing white smoke indicates a well-established fire going before the big orange boom went off. Huge flames are clearly visible in the second video prior to the explosion.

So sad. Such a beautiful city and many of the people are so warm and welcoming. Just tragic.

If it was ammonium nitrate the size of the explosion is understandable. In 1947, two ships carrying ammonium nitrate blew up while docked in Texas City, Texas. Around 700 were killed.

Wow, indications are that this may very well be an accident due to insufficient storage controls. Over a hundred dead (and climbing) and a few thousand injured.

This is an example of not having regulations which occurs after deregulation. In this case a regulation that bands storing explosive devices and highly flammable materials with Ammonium Nitrate.
