I don't have one but seeing and hearing one has made me thankful that I took up the guitar instead.

Before knocking them too much, I'd watch Joe Bonamassa's "An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House".
It's a great concert video and one was used to good effect that evening. Highly recommended. |

What an appropriate instrument for Winston Wolfe

It’s a popular instrument here in Scandinavia. I haven’t watched the video you linked to but I usually mic them up with a dpa4099 using the guitar clip. They sound sort of like a violin but with loads of resonance thanks to the drone strings. The sound of the keys being depressed is unavoidable but a part of the experience. The sound can be quite haunting because of its intrinsic resonance.

This delightful young lady explains the instrument quite well.
I have a very faint memory of being taken to a concert in a school hall of traditional Swedish music by my girlfriend of the time probably in Skåne.(the southernmost län, of Sweden) in the '70s, and seeing one of these, and also (I think Hardanger fiddles. Being a young heavy rock drummer at the time I wasn't too interested. Here's one used in a trio with 5 string Viols )?) and 12 string guitar - the Band is Väsen from Uppsala where my girlfriend studied for a while before moving to København. (I'm kinda surprised that Wade doesn't have two or three!)

I have a friend who builds them (and also Hardanger fiddles, banjos, mandolins....)
Nyckleharpa is Sweden's official folk instrument. The Swedish folk trio Våssen that Andy linked above features it extensively. And Michael Marin (of Våssen) does play a 5 string viola (i've got a couple of those myself). I've been fortunate to see them several times at Wintergrass and attend workshops with Michael. |

I first learned of their existence yesterday evening. Funny comments above notwithstanding, these are cool instruments. To me, its like a cross between a violin and an autoharp of sorts. Perhaps something for me to do in these Covidays. Time to look for one (along with a face/eye shield, of course!)

Here’s a modern Swedish trio using a nyckelharpa. Great stuff! https://youtu.be/urWg3BZGGiM

All those AGFers that insist on straight string pull at the nut will have a collective heart attack if they watch that video!
Love that guitar (who makes it?).
