So I have to say I'm really in love with this sound port design. Not only does it work well with Ray's aesthetic, but it's unique and interesting. And there is more in store so stay tuned.

I will also add that Ray has been an absolute gem to work with throughout this process. I think by now has read the equivalent of War and Peace in email volume from me and has spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone (and even once in person). He's gone out of his way at every step to make sure my 20,000 questions are answered and to bring me along for the experience of building the guitar. It's been really fun so far, and I can't wait to see and hear the final product.

In the next step, Ray will apply his 100 ton press to the top of the rim fixture and smash off the ends of the lattice work on the back that are sticking out.

To those that may ask, "Is that really necessary?" I ask, are you really committed to the best tone?? The process of tone optimization is not for the squeamish.

Magic fingers. The ceiling these poles push against vibrates overnight to help sooth the wood before voicing. The last thing you want is tense wood before voicing. In the morning, Ray will sing to the top and back for 15 minutes.

Box is closed up. I'm really happy with how the ebony looks on this guitar. Everything is coming together exactly how I imagined.

I've only just realised the small rectangle coming off radially from the soundhole is a "void" - I thought it was ebony until I saw light coming through it in your pics!

Ray certainly doesn't seem short on new ideas.

cheers,
Steve

I usually don't like sound ports. Just a round hole cut in the side.

But this one looks very good.

It's quite a wild looking guitar! Reminds me of many Matsudas I've seen with that style of abstract rosette & other minute details. I like the lattice braced back. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the guitar when it's finished. Please keep posting pics! I am enjoying this thread!

Body is sanded. More art to come. Then a brief pause while Ray visits Woodstock. Then the home stretch.

That's one BEAUTIFUL guitar! Your hilarious commentary easily makes this one of my favorite build threads.

Every time one of you post photos from Ray's shop I get more and more jealous of his tools. That sliding saw is a beauty.
