Ray traveled to Peru in 1895 and felled a highly sought after Kerfing tree. He's been curing it ever since so that he could use it on my guitar. He cuts the kerfing himself with a laser from his right eye. Very dangerous to interrupt him during this process.

Was that "the Kerfing tree"? Wow... I've always wanted a guitar made with wood from "the Kerfing tree"...

No, you're thinking of The Plant. This tree was nicknamed The The Tree, as it was the first tree to ever be given an affectionate nickname by luthiers.

Ray decided against the toilet lid at the last minute and chiseled the bracing off. I guess he seems to think this ebony will work better. I'm really taking a leap of faith with him here.

I thought for a few posts that your guitar was going to be a non cutaway.
Ray mentioned that he never built a non cutaway Mod D, not even during his apprenticeship with Ervin. I'm considering a 12-fret Mod D, no cutaway. The strong contrast on your guitar gave me a few ideas. |

That was just to throw you off the trail. I actually think the aesthetics are so nice with the cutaway that I would probably opt for it even if there wasn't a functional issue. A 12 fret non-cutaway would definitely be cool to see.

However, as the build approached, I thought increasingly that ordering a non-cutaway MD was rather like getting a yellow Ferrari; there are one or two around, but most are red. I bought the red guitar in the end. The Andamento is non-cutaway, and there are a few others, but not many. Now, a 12-fret cutaway MD would be an interesting idea, but read Ervin's books re 12-vs 14-fret bridge positioning. My Kostal OM will be non-cutaway. Cheers, Steve |

As per Ervin, the 12-fret models have a bit of a softer tone, more melodic -- but I just think they look cool.
While I may not buy the yellow Ferrari, I would probably go for silver rather than red... I also think the non-cutaway body is a better fit with Ray's elevated fingerboard design. I live in a difficult climate (very humid in the summer, very dry in the winter) so a bolt-on neck is a neat feature (just in case). |

Collection of cubist soundports. Or single cubist soundport. It's open to interpretation. Are we together? Are we alone? Are we just a bunch of squares (and rectangles)? It's a thought piece.

Ray's shop at night. The ebony blends right in.
