Ray used a staple gun to attach a knotty pine bridge and then put a nice ebony veneer over the pine. I think it turned out pretty nice. The staples are supposed to last at least two years before they pull out of the top.

Hey Juston, a serious question for once, and at page 14 I am not going back into the thread to look for an earlier comment! How did you approach the option of making it fan fret... any particular reasons for not doing it?

Thanks,
Col

It might be somewhat difficult to answer with the full line of reasoning. I can tell you that, in my experience with a 3/4" fan fret spread, I really don't think there is any downside to fan fret, other than perhaps the additional cost.

I think I started in that direction 1) because I have a Mustapick fan fret and I like the ergonomics and 2) Ray usually builds his guitars around shorter scale lengths and medium gauge strings. I generally like longer scale lengths and light strings. (Though, to be honest, now that I've played a couple of Ray's OMs quite extensively, I can tell you that a 25" scale with mediums sounds and feels pretty stellar).

So part of the original thinking was to increase the bass scale length and optimize for light strings. Another significant part of my decision was that I tend to play in dropped tunings fairly often, so it's important for me to get good bass response under lower tension. I can't say with authority that you have to have a fan fret to accomplish this. There are plenty of examples to the contrary, but surely it helps to at least some extent.

Though I will start out with a full set of lights, I may end up putting heavier strings on the high E and B, but we'll see.

Lastly, I would say I like to mix things up and do things out of the ordinary with custom builds. At least to a certain extent. A fan fret is one way to do that.

Love the colourful inlays and the overall "mean" look.

Looking forward to hearing a first strum.

I jumped the gun on "it's done." There are still a few things left like shaping the nut, final polish, and final setup. But it's darn close. I'm super excited to hear how it sounds.

Make sure you get the twist latches. They are awesome and much better than the stock latches, in my opinion.

Our very own Billy Boy is the only person not named Ray to ever play this modified dread. I hope he was not modified with dread after playing it. Ray tells me the guitar sounds decent.
