What custom string configuration do you use?
Hi,
Let's talk strings. For those who use custom string sets, what brand & configuration do you use and why ? Please indicate guitar brand and model as well. THANKS! |

I don’t use custom string sets per say but I do make up my own. If I am trying to tame a bright guitar that typically has lights 12-54 I will change out the 12 & 16 for 13 & 17 . The larger diameter plain steel trebles have a fatter tone which I like. I currently have this on my Eastman 00 12fret.
You can buy individual D’Addario and Elixr strings from Strings by Mail. I also have individual strings from Newtone |

I have some custom Newton’s sets in light gauge but with a 13.5 and 18 top two which I use on my Webber OM for finger style playing - nice fat trebles but a tad harder to play. Jury is out..

Newtone Round Core 12-16-26-36-46-56 PB’s on my D18... boom!
Loud and easy to play.

Not a custom set per-se, but if I'm playing a lot of slide I will sometimes swap out the top 12-gauge string (I play D'Addario EJ-16 lights) with a 13.5-gauge. I almost always play in lowered tunings like CGCFCD and the 13.5 tuned to D pulls roughly the same tension as a 12 tuned to standard E. It just helps provide a bit more support for the slide on the top string, without compromising fingerstyle playability.
I learned the trick from Martin Simpson, who plays medium (13-gauge) D'Addario sets but replaces the top with a 15, for the same reason. Cheers, David
