Lately I've been taking on songs that are just plain hard. The melody's tricky and the chords are weird and that kind of thing. Stuff like "God Only Knows," and "All the Things You Are," and "Nature Boy."

My latest project has been Jobim's "Desafinado." But I'm deep enough into it that I've decided not to go further because I'm getting the sense that Jobim got a certain way with it and then kinda quit. He stopped before it was really polished. Also, Jon Hendricks' English lyrics aren't his best day at the office, either.

The first few lines of the melody, though, are as perfect as anything anyone's ever written. Maybe I'll change my mind.

I've just spent 2.5 years trying to become a finger-picker and playing 99 per cent instrumental tunes. It's great stuff, even if it is a pretty solitary pursuit. * But revisiting this thread has inspired me to learn some new songs (w/vocals).

My wife loves loves loves Bruce Springsteen, and when "Long Walk Home" came on the radio the other day she said it was one of his prettiest songs. I always thought it was a protest song But she likes it, so I worked it up into a medley with "My City of Ruins" (she doesn't really like the slow stuff, but I do) and "Waiting on a Sunny Day," another one of her uptempo favorites.

I'm struck by the fact that these songs are all from recordings released in the 21st century, 30 or so years or more into his career. The man is prolific.

* I heard a great quote attributed to John Mayer recently. Question: "Where did you learn to play the guitar like that?". Answer, "In my bedroom."

I just finished up Michael Martin Murphey's cover of "What's Forever For", but with only one key change and an additional verse from the England Dan and John Ford Coley version. Now I'm working on Clint Black's "Something That We Do" in open E tuning.

Planxty Irwin, On Castle Rock, Si Beag, Si Mor, Summer Before the War, Cairn Water, Night in That Land...... I have a few going on. I'll write a random tune to break things up now and then. I'm bouncing back and forth between DADGAD, CGDGCD AND CGDGAD.

Um, not learning much, but looking at my Y/T channel :

Remembering Mr Bojangles

Step Inside This House (Guy Clark) Something somewhere reminded me of this song, which I hadn't ever learnt

Guilty (Randy Newman)

and remembering some stuff that I wrote :

It's a hoot, Kathy Brier sings it with considerable gusto and the clarinets break my brain every time.

A great series which high lighted some of the great tunes from the twenties and thirties

When someone posted Yoni Schlesinger's flamenco version of Sultans of Swing, I decided to give it a go. A long ways off from even developing my version, but I'm going to see how far I get without having to learn all those flamenco chops.

Acoustic: still working on getting "Fire and Rain" to sound reasonably right. I need to speed up some.

Electric: am learning the solo to Fleetwood Mac's Boston Tea Party "Jumping at Shadows." We have that wonderful intro at least tabbed out and more or less memorized (not saying it sounds even close to right) and are half way through tabbing out the solo.

Getting the phrasing right is a stretch for my playing level. But I love messing around with it.

"I like to Sleep Late in the Morning" I don't think he wrote it but plays it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Cw...&start_radio=1

it would not be possible without Transcribe. sometimes one or two notes at a time.
