...some things are harder than others to maintain course on. My wife said "Now that you have the cash, why not just get that more expensive Martin you want?"

There is a law against that in Chicago now:

Section 529
Article II
Subsection 3
Paragraph 1

“Thou shalt have more that 2 guitars”

For the most part I've maintained a one-in, one-out rule. I've never bought a guitar I didn't play first. Once I do find a better guitar the old one gets traded, sold or donated. I won't play it anymore. For a couple years I bought and flipped Martins I got good deals on but that was because they were easily marketed. It was a side business and I might have as many as 6 waiting to be flipped.

Default Down to 2 Guitars now

This is an Anti-GAS thread!

It is indeed very refreshing...to be honest.

One day, one day in the future...I’ll own 2 guitars. But for now, I’m still enjoying my 6 guitars. They are relatively inexpensive guitars and I enjoy the different top woods that are available to me. They are: Monkeypod, Koa, Sapele, Spruce & Carbon Composite.

I went through a period of experimentation where I was trying to determine what guitar would work for me. I'm not a collector but I had a lot acoustics pass through my hands, mostly lower priced but decent quality stuff. Eventually I discovered that a 1 3/4 inch nut width fits me the best. Currently I'm thinning the herd to where I will have just three. A dread, an OM and a 00 will do everything I need to do.

It's in my signature for the acoustics.

Even though it is rare for me to play more than 2 guitars in one day (except for the weekends), somehow having only 2 would have me looking for another.... Actually I'm still doing that......

I'm down to 3 acoustics, 5 electrics, 6 electric amps, and 3 acoustic amps. It used to be over 30 guitars, and 20 amps. Not including mixers and PA.

There are periods of time when I think two is the right number of guitars for me. Then there are days like yesterday when once again a third one gets delivered.

Yes, I've had the same experience and some 4-5 years later still have the two I decided to keep. I would be lying if I didn't say I still occasionally get a short bout of GAS but I've managed to fight it off.

Many moons ago in my later teens into 20s I played a lot, gigs with bands, solo, etc. I never had more than 3 guitars during those days (LP, Gibson ES-125, and Yamaha Acoustic) and never wanted for another. Fast forward 30 years and now I'm a basement rock star with the occasional friend/neighbor gathering/jam session yet I managed to accumulate 6-7 guitars and 3-4 others than came and went over 10 years. Why?

So I spent a few weeks playing them all a lot, deciding which ones fit my current needs and ranked them. Off they all went to good homes except for two....the old LP and a Gibby acoustic.

If I make a living out of playing guitars, I would have more than 2.

Fixed Income.

As I am headed into retirement, I will have less discretionary income but more time to play guitars. I am filling my GAS tank, so to speak, now so I will have a nice collection of 4 to retire with.

Best,
Jayne

I used to watch the tiny house shows on television and always wished that I could a follow-up a year later. I'd say the same about the SAG trend. I too have gotten down to a minimal number of guitars, but now find myself with seven...
