I was recently holidaying in the U.S and bought a used Martin Kingston Trio OO-21 that was supplied with a Geib case.
We flew with Hawaiian airlines from L.A. to Honalulu then picked up a connecting flight to Sydney. At check in, I asked to carry my guitar on to the flight and was told that decision was up to the cabin crew.. I wasn't taking that chance so I asked to label the guitar as fragile and it arrived in good order.... |

Of course there's always Dave Carroll and "United Breaks Guitars". If you're not familiar with this story, it's not fiction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo Don . PS> It's a really good song and video too. Very catchy and bouncy. And sarcastic.

"So I guess a great flight case doesn't guarantee your guitar's safety"
They can only offer a degree of safety. When/if the trauma exceeds that degree, there will be damage. The best cases do offer a higher degree of safety, but not infinite safety regardless of level of trauma. As usual, a of "guarantee of safety" is an illusion people mistake for a fact. For promoting safety as absolute I blame those selling and marketing products. The only way to make a guitar 100% safe when traveling is to never travel. If you must travel you must decide on the degree of safety you're willing to pay for and accept that even that is not 100% safe. Last edited by Tico; 04-27-2019 at 03:21 PM. |

This story sounds suspect to me. Considering the league the band is in and everything it doesn't have that ring of truth to me. But, hey, that's just me.

Well, a mediocre one sure doesn't:

Having your guitar destroyed really stinks! But I find it hard to believe that Nick doesn’t have a backup guitar. Most of us have backup guitars and we’re not in headlining bands.

[QUOTE=nightflight;6047643]No way would my guitar, in a Hoffee case fit in the overhead compartment. /QUOTE]
Really? My Hiscox OM case has fit fine overhead in just about every airplane I've ever been on, the exceptions being a couple of tiny commuter planes. I would have assumed a Hiscox case would be bigger and bulkier than a Hoffee.

Look on the bright side. It could've be worse. At least they minimized the damage by keeping the correct side up. Last edited by Tico; 04-27-2019 at 10:42 PM. |

The OP s post named the band as the red hot chili PIPERS rather than peppers, so is this a different lesser known band?
Also I agree that the case looks like a chipboard case and thus doesn't deserve to be called a flightcase let alone a "great flight case". A carbon fiber or fiberglass flight case would have likely survived being run over as described so as far as I am concerned, the band was contributorily negligent in transporting its instruments in so careless a manner as check in baggage.

I couldn’t find any mention in the Italian media. Turns out it’s a story from 7 years ago, and it was the “Pipers” not Peppers!

Yes. This is precisely why my band and I (Ink Jet Kittens) only travel by vintage school bus like the Partridge Family.
Actually, I don’t have a band and I’ve never flown with a guitar, but if I did I’d definitely stay in a Holiday Inn Express. So there.... |
