Default Correspondents’ Dinner mics

When money is no object, what mic does the US president or Correspondents’ Dinner use?

Why a Shure SM57 of course! Two: one for the PA system, and one for the press feed.

Of course! You have to love a mic you could drive nails with and it would still work. Mine is at least 40 years old and though I haven't literally driven nails with it, road wear has been intense at times. It's still working fine.

I think I'm the only person in history to have an SM58 crap out on me. Bought it brand new and only used a few times. I kept it in my "oh crap" bag as a backup, got it out one night and nothing, it was completely dead. I sent it off to Shure and they replaced it with a brand new one for around $60. I still use Shure mics and will continue to have confidence in them. My gigging mics are Beta 58's and I still keep two SM58's as backups.

Well... maybe.

While they look like two 57s at the podium, one was a Schoeps CK41/CMC5.

Do you have a source for that? Presidents of both parties have been using the two SM57 arrangement for years. It’s not that I don’t believe you, I just want to verify.

Do you know if which mic was used for the press feed and which one was used for the live PA?

I found this (with the same pic and wording), but it was for the 2021 inauguration. That does make it seem likely that the setup has changed since then though.

That makes it sound like they probably split the schoeps for both the PA and press feed, and just used the 57 as a bullet proof backup.
