Even if I don't get the best nights sleep, I always seem to play better and am more creative in the morning. That is, after I drag myself out of bed, feed the dog, work out and take a shower starting at 5am before I go to work. It gives me time to wake up and get loose before pickin' and grinnin' time. At the end of the day my hind end is dragging and I don't always have the energy to play well. The weekends are a bit better. It's that getting up and going to work thing that keeps getting in the way.

You just have to train them young. We would leave out a dish of fresh dry food and water at night in case he got hungry and we were never disturbed. When we went to bed we said goodnight to the cat and closed the bedroom door. If he came to the closed bedroom door as a kitten and meowed, he was ignored. It did not take him long to catch on. When he was an adult cat, we could leave the bedroom door open and not be disturbed. Day time was play time and he got lots of attention. He was a very affectionate and interactive cat and would amaze us with his ability to ring the front door bell to be let in, push open windows to get outside. He would greet visitors to our home with a meow and allow (demand) that they pet him. I could go on...He passed away decades ago.

That’s what I like about my dogs. They sleep in their kennel and are trained to hold it until I let them out in the morning. Between my wife and I, we’re not going to make them wait for a ridiculous long time, but I’m also not getting up at 4:30 or 5 on my off days to let them out.

No surprise that I play better when I’m most clear-minded, focused, relaxed and full of energy. For me that’s in the morning. Right after breakfast I grab the guitars and play for at least an hour usually two. I also grab a guitar and play for 10-15 minutes just before my late afternoon cocktail time kicks off. I don’t play as well as I do during my morning practice...which is why I keep it fun and just play through some songs I have down pretty well and enjoy.

BTW this doesn’t involve just guitar playering for me. I’m better at ALL creative things in the am. I made my living as a writer and did most of it in the morning...whether it was journalism, fiction, poetry or, later in life, sermons. For me, the muse has always spoken more clearly in the fresh breath of morning.

I think my guitar sounds best at night when all the ambient sound is gone and just a little touch makes it ring. It also sounds better when the humidity isn't 98%. I hate summer!

Yes, I’ve noticed this as well. After say a half hour warm up in the morning things really go well. If I don’t play until the afternoon/evening my muscles are usually tired and some cramping might occur. I don’t drink water as much as I should throughout the day, though, either.

But a law school professor who only scheduled courses in the morning cited a study that showed our brains were most active and receptive to information in the morning. I believe the peak was around 10:30 am if I recall correctly.

I have noticed that my guitars sound better in the morning, as well - around 2 o'clock in the morning.

For 21 years I got up at 5:40 AM to make breakfast, get ready and drive downtown by 7:00 AM to go to work. The last thing I wanted to do was play the guitar before going to work, so, I have no idea what my playing would be like before 7:00 AM in the morning. Can your wife hear the guitar playing in the morning?

I'm fortunate in that I have my office on my property so I can walk out the house door to work in 30 seconds. I do play quietly and it does not disturb my wife.

I'm definitely more of a morning person. As a septuagenarian, I tend to tire as the day goes along. So yes, everything sounds better in the morning for these and other reasons, coffee not being one in my case.

In addition, I live in a tree-lined residential suburb of a large city, surrounded by double decker dwellings, and I find mornings to be the quietest times of the day. So with less street noise, less distractions, and a fresh daily outlook, a not-too-early morning session can be most rewarding.

It is always cooler and a bit more brisk at that time of day. Also there is some daily atmospheric fluctuation thing going on, as radio operators can attest to. So maybe guitars really do sound better at that time. I'll leave that to the scientists.

Sometimes I only know what I don't know.

Don

For me, mornings on the weekend before the wife gets up are best. The day has just started and there’s no sludge on the brain yet.

I'm sure all my guitars sound great 24-7...

My PLAYING, however, doesn't enter into the equation until after a couple cups of coffee, and a mid morning breakfast...followed by a leisurely shower…
