Tom Morello straps so high he says he hits himself in the chin a lot when he gets rolling...

Whatever works for you is cool...

That's pretty close to what I do.
Look at some pics of George Harrison and John Lennon.
Strapped up there pretty high.

Modified classical position for me. It's just what I do.

I've always wore my guitars higher than lower. The older I get, the higher they get (not unlike pants...). When I started playing in high school I never could be comfortable with my guitar slung down low.

Works for the rock guys- Jimmy Page for example.

But I'm more like Rivers Cuomo (Wheezer) or Elvis Costello, Muzz Skaggs (Living Color).

I notice the acoustic greats (my influences) such as Taylor, Young, Stills, Garcia, Crosby, Dylan and Drake (Nick- the guitar player not the one named Crapper) wear them at their waist or higher.

High strappers have more fun.

I was told to hold the guitar in a position that is most comfortable to EVERYONE ELSE.

And that's it. - CASE CLOSED!

But seriously, I find it difficult to play acoustic stood up with a strap and equally difficult to play electric sat down on my knee.

My preferred position is stood on my left leg with my right leg raised on a stool and guitar across my thigh. But as Mr Moustache says in the video above, that will surely catch up with me in the not too distant future.

I am most comfortable with a strap, too. I try to go for a position that puts each arm at a sturdy right angle at the elbow, the guitar being a more diagonal than horizontal. That said, everyone’s different. I just encourage my students to find a way to hold it that makes sense for their body, guitar-size, and playing style. Do what makes sense for you, not just what’s conventional or cool.

I concur, I absolutely can not play my guitars resting on my Right leg. Just won't happen, and I've tried several times.

Whatever’s clever. But, you have to understand, some days I prefer my guitar higher. Sometimes lower. Our bodies change daily. Adjust until you do not feel pain.

Bob
I'm with Bob in terms of how I hold my guitar while standing. Sometimes a little more centered particularly while sitting, almost classical style.

The thing is that people have different levels of flexibility in their hands, wrists and other joints. I would never play with my axe in a position like those rockers who hang their guitars down around their jewels? In fact, 1/2" too high or too low and my facility is compromised. And while I can play with the guitar waist on my right knee, eventually I'll have to shift it center if I have anything to play up the neck. And playing right of center also articulates the right shoulder more. Again- joint flexibility. I have to wonder about some of the guys that complain about shoulder pain while playing dread sized guitars aren't suffering because they don't have their guitars centered enough for shoulder comfort?

So I guess I'm in the "whatever works" camp too.

I always wear a strap but have still struggled sitting.

Going to make an effort to try wearing the guitar a lot higher sitting.

I tried it briefly and it really does help, which is counterintuitive to me I guess.

I usually feel like I want it lower so I can relax my right shoulder more. But it never feels like I can get it low enough sitting.

Weird feeling, wearing it higher suddenly makes it so you can tilt the neck up more and you can drop your right arm as a result.

It somehow feels like it might make hard strumming harder though?
