Default J-45 Back Binding Dimensions...

Hello Friends,

One of my students has a 1957 J-45 which needed a new back.

His project is dragging on quite some time (medical issues) and so it is over a year since he has been in. He isn't even sure if he can find the original binding fragments that were removed, or dimensions we measured during removal.

His next task is to route and install back bindings. Usually, when I replace or repair bindings of vintage guitars, I simply measure what is there and replace to the same dimensions. But since I do not have another 1957 Gibson J-45 "in stock" to take dimensions from, I would be "shooting blind".

I can surely make a good estimate, but I'd rather have accurate dimensions.

Is anyone able to give me the dimensions for the back binding - height and width??

Many thanks.

Back binding should be the same size as the top binding.
Gibson binding is usually around 0.060" thick. Width will vary, but 0.200" is pretty typical.
