Default Lattanze 00-13 deep body, Zebrawood, Torrefied Sitka

I'm down the rabbit hole with a trio of 00-13 guitars. The first is the prototype, a mahogany going to my son for his 1st birthday in August. The other is IRW/Carpathian. The one I'll highlight here is a Zebrawood set. I'm working off some specs of SantaCruz's H-13 model with a longer scale length and deeper body, though I'm working with a different shape I drew and taking some liberties with the aesthetics.

I'm going for an ellipse rosette that swooshes into the fingerboard. Here it is on the prototype with Cocobolo inlayed into Jatoba.

On the ZW I'm going to use Ebony for the FB and use a simple maple purfling to outline that swoosh.

Looks great Anthony. Zebrawood is a species I've wanted to try, so I look forward to your report.

Default Wood selection

They look sweet. How do you like the Torrefied spruce. I've used it 2x and like the sound. I find it quite brittle and stiffer than I would expect for the # of annular rings on my pieces. Makes me wonder if really tight grain spruce might end up too stiff if Torrefied . I think I can smell the roasted lignan when I work it LOL .Russ Parker

Will do. So far I do not enjoy the smell, nor its texture. Taptone is thuddy. Hoping to get some woody mahogany sounds out of it. We'll see!

This is my first time working with it. So far I agree! I'm liking it so far. Can't wait to hear it.

I tried my hand at some zebrawood radial purfling. I've seen some other luthiers do it and I love the look. Can anybody tell me who I should give credit to?

Default Radial purfling

Love the look, Never seen it before. Used it in rosettes . Just doing a zebra wood body with black binding, wish I had seen the zebra wood purfling first. LOL

After watching the sixers win a mercy game tonight I went down and I finished cutting the purfling miters and binding the box. I had some time to scrape but not sand. Gotta get my rest tonight. The baby is sick and wife works all day tomorrow. Plus, I gotta get back on these repairs. If it weren't for the money, I'd stop repairing tomorrow and just build.

Smile Looks very NICE

This is going to be real pretty!

Remember on the repairs that you are making many folks happy and a lot of music will be the result of your efforts. May the good Lord bless all conscientious repair techs!

And may your herds increase as well!

Thanks for the pretty pics!!!

Paul

Wow - really nice work. I do have an SC H-13 Lucas so I'm familiar with this type of guitar. I think yours is going to look great. Looking forward to some sound clips.

Thanks JR and Paul,
I've been busy still with repairs which is why I haven't posted updates. I finished the fretboard and faceplate this week. This is my take on a torch that includes my "fertility" motif, which I've done in the past. This will be a slotted headstock like your H-13, JR. IMG_8274.jpg
