Default If you had a choice.........

Say you really love the fender strat and tele and could buy only one in the mid to upper price ranges. Which would you buy, with all things equal as far as fit, finish, sound, comfort, etc? Or, would you buy one of each in say the upper Squire line? Again, all things being equal.

I would go for a MIM or MIA vintage spec Tele. The Squier Classic Vibe Tele will require an immediate upgrade to the input jack but is nevertheless a good guitar, but will be heavier in weight. The Squier CV Strat loses note focus (fuzzy) at higher volume clean due to lightweight tremolo block, so it requires an upgrade.

Thank you for that insight! Helps in the decision process.

You’re welcome. I like vintage specifications on telecasters due to light weight tuners and other appointments, but I’m really stuck on the tuners especially.

If you are able to find a ‘52 or ‘58 reissue [American made] (currently out of production) you will reach the gold, in my opinion.

Tele.

I am an unabashed Telecaster fanboy, and proud of it. I love everything about them.

The Strat was a solution to a problem that didn't exist, imho.

Honestly, they're so different I'm surprised you're drawn to both.

i wouldnt say the sound and comfort would be equal, this is a matter of personal taste, i really dont think a high end squier would be in my budget- id rather a good used tele or strat, actually, i love the sound and feel of my strat, but its not even a strat, its freebie partscaster

Mr. B,
Being a relative beginner in guitar, especially electric, I am drawn to the looks of the strat and tele. I played electric for the first time this Saturday, a Yamaha se200 that I bought for my son 30 years ago. The Fenders are a classic and the looks to me are appealing. I will start my search in earnest in a couple of weeks. For all I know, when I get them in hand I will hate them. After playing acoustic guitars, the Yamaha feels like a ton, but I’m really enjoying it!

As you see from my User Name, I love Strats!

I've played them for decades and really do love them. Teles are also nice, but definitely a different beast. I just never warmed up to them. Many very respected pros have played both, so I don't think you can go wrong with either. I just prefer the feel (body and neck) of a Strat.

Both great guitars, I'm just a Tele guy forever.

As I think about this, I wonder if Tele guys gravitate more towards Martins and Strat guys to Taylors? Certainly would be an over-generalization, but .. ?

Actually, not me. I'm very much a Tele guy, and greatly prefer Taylors to Martins.

Well, I currently have a nice Tele and a Strat, and various other cool guitars, but I am a Martin fan mostly, so not sure how that really plays out. I even have a Les Paul, and now a Reverend too!

To answer the question, I am probably happiest with my American Special Strat. It gives me good tones and I can even get a few Tele like tones out of it too. So, of the Strat versus Tele thing, probably the Strat (which has Texas Specials, which are hot). BUT... I really like my Squire J Mascis Jazzmaster, possibly more than the Strat or Tele. That thing can get some serious twang, but also has a great Jazzy voice in the neck pickup. And, it didn't break the bank in terms of cost.

The ergonomics of a Strat suit me better. If I had to pick one, I might go option C and get some sort of Strat-o-tele hybrid like this (not mine).

Personally I'd go with a MIA Strat, an H-S-S. I have a Seymour Duncan hotrails in one of my MIAs but I think I'd prefer a full humbucker.
