Default Pickup for Martin DSS-17 Black Smoke

I know there are probably a ton of posts about a similar topic but me and my soon to be guitar are unique snowflakes I have a DSS-17 Black Smoke on reserve right now and I should be getting it sometime in May. I am definitely going to need a pickup in it.

Anyone have any recommendations. Budget is probably around $200... but might go higher for the right thing.

I will play this both plugged in with a full rock band and solo singer/songwriter stuff. So I can't deal with anything that will cause feedback.

I am looking at the Fishman Matrix and the Baggs Session VTC. Any others I should consider? I was a little sad to see that Martin doesn't sell the Matrix Enhance VT by itself. I played a guitar with that system and liked it.

any help is greatly appreciated

I play loud. In bars. Three guitars. D18. J50. 000-28. They all have k&ks, through a red eye preamp, and I uses a soundhole cover.

You could also opt for a K&K preamp as well, which has some EQ and volume control. You can get the K&K installed for $150 and the K&K preamp used for $50, and you are done.

I like the sound. And no battery and weight in the guitar.

Default Pick up

+1 for the K&K Mini. Great pick up and you'll never have to worry about a battery dying in the middle of a set.

to get above a full rock band generally requires a magnetic soundhole pickup to have enough gain before feedback.

My preference for entry level is the DiMarzio The Angel passive.

plus one on the mag pup. I like the baggs m80
but the sunrise is also good and its black.
loud bands will be difficult with kk or any
SBT type . just a lot of rumbling around inside
the guitar because of bass and elect guitar.

Thanks for the replies been off the acoustic forum for a bit. I am not too keen on the soundhole mag pickup alone.

is there a way to blend the Black Angel and the Black Angel Piezo into one output? That would be pretty cool.

Anyone have any experience with the Session VTC?

The Seymour Duncan Mag Mic has a built-in mic along with the magnetic pickup. You might also consider the Baggs M1 or M80. Here's a comparison video:

How feedback prone is the Schatten HFN vs something like a UST?
