I trust Rich Addison doesn't mind my quoting him:

"Authentics are great guitars period, Martin has been doing this a long time and when they pull out all the stops on Authentics or high end limited or custom shops IMO they make as good a guitar as any boutique. They certainly have more man-years of experience than anybody....I think it shows...."

There you have it!
John.

A highly trusted reviewer had this to say about the 1939 A:

"“Rear-shifted braces, with the main X brace placed a bit farther back than on modern Martins. This helps add to the openness of the voice, and reduces the rumble in the bass, so the bottom notes retain great definition while the highs have all the cutting power.”
“ It still had a powerful bottom E string, but overall it was very clear and clean in its mahogany-ness, bright, dry, and chimey, with great definition in the fundamentals and a Windex-clear openness underneath. “

Is this guitar rear-shifted or forward-shifted?

It is the 1939 model and so it is rear-shifted.
The above comments [which contrast this to a 1937 forward shifted] apply.

Calling veteran AGF'ers to help post my pictures.
For my last guitar a kind soul posted them for me. I am grateful but
learned nothing.
So...Using Flickr it says R click "Properties". Well nothing like that comes up.
it says the usual "Copy image" "Print" etc. No "Properties" so no success.
Where is a sympathetic teacher?

If you look at the Flickr page (once you've brought up a specific photo), in the bottom right hand corner you should see this:

Click on the second button from the left, the right pointing arrow, and you should see this:

Make sure BB code is highlighted on the top line. Then you can choose the size/resolution with the drop down menu in the lower box:

Once you've chosen your size, make sure the code in the upper box is highlighted in blue, then click COPY. Come back to AGF and just PASTE that into your post, and the full code (a few lines) will show up in your window. And then when you hit "preview post" or "submit reply", the photo should show up in the post. That's how I've posted these screen shots. Should work - good luck... If you hit the "quote" button at the bottom of this post, you should see what the code looks like, in case it's not showing up for you...

Ray, on behalf of all AGF novices, and there are lots of them,
a hearty thank you!

Ray:
Thank you again for your teaching. Unfortunately, I am a slow learner.
My pictures don't come up with download or BB code.
Next week I have a computer wiz coming in.
