Default "Acoustic" covers of "electric" tunes

Having heard some interesting acoustic covers of some originally electric tunes, I would like to develop a list of this type performance. Three examples which come readily to mind are: Thea Gilmore's cover of "Bad Moon Rising" as compared to the original Credence Clearwater version; Aztec Camera's cover of "Jump" by Van Halen; and (my favorite) Asia's acoustic version of their own "Heat of the Moment".

There's a Dutch artist named Stevie Ann (y'all might have heard of her before; I'd never seen her until youtube) who has a couple I like: Toxic (originally a Britney Spears tune...trust me, give Stevie's version a shot) and One Year of Love (originally a Queen tune). Nickel Creek also did Toxic (a little more of a comedic performance than Stevie Ann's ) and The Weight. They did The Weight in the middle of The Fox. Chris Thile did this insane break, they change tempo, and do The Weight...then they finish The Fox.

This is one of my favorite things to do, too--cover electric tunes in an acoustic version. That said, I think our tastes differ a bit, but I'll offer you a couple of ideas that have always gone over well for me:

Neil Young--Powderfinger
Beatles--Strawberry Fields
Pink Floyd--Arnold Layne
Pink Floyd--ComfortablyNumb
Soundgarden--Black Hole Sun
Smashing Pumpkins--Today
Rolling Stones--Can't Always Get What You Want
Jimmy Reed--Big Boss Man
Grateful Dead--Bertha
Grateful Dead--Morning Dew
Grateful Dead--Deal
Tom Petty--You Don't Kniw How It Feels

There are a couple of great covers by David Wilcox on his Big Horizon cd... The Four Tops/It's the Same Old Song and John Waite/Missing You.

And Richard Shindell on his live Courier cd did great covers of Little Feat/Willin' and Springsteen/Fourth of July, Asbury Park.

I remember someone famous in the past saying "a great song will stand up on its own stripped down to a acoustic guitar and vocal". My wife and I do quite a few covers of electric tunes. Some of our favorites are the Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive", Usher's "Yea" and STP's "Interstate Love Song".

IMO, generally almost any musician who performs solo acoustic ends up doing at least a few (and more often Many) acoustic versions of electric songs. You kind of run out of true acoustic songs pretty quick if you're doing covers unless you really pick and choose what you do......

A few that I do:

Dire Straits- So Far Away

Collective Soul- The world I know & Shine

K. Wayne Shepherd- Blue on Black

Wallflowers- 1 Headlight

Clapton- Promises & Lay Down Sally

Clint Black- Killin' Time & Walkin' Away

Bruce Springsteen- Cover Me & I'm On Fire

Joe Niichols- Brokenheartsville

The ultimate in acoustic covers of electrics songs has to be Hayseed Dixie. For those that don't already know, they do bluegrass versions of rock and metal songs. Their version of Motorheads "Ace of Spades" is fabulous!

Have you ever heard any of the "Pickin On...: series of recordings? A bunch of studio guys in Nashville do 'em and they're great. Hearing a dobro belt out the lead lines on "Whipping Post" with a mandolin doing the the back up lines ROCKS!! Check them out.

I play with a band that does primarily 60's pop, rock & country (we stretch a bit to add a few from the 50's and 70's, too) ... Stones, Beatles, Neil Diamond, Elvis, CCR, etc. We also do an "acoustic" trio thing, without drums. For this gig, we pretty much just do the same stuff we do electric, but with acoustic guitar instead.

Default acoustic cover

Richard Shindell does a great acoustic cover of Born in the USA. You can actually hear the words. As a big Springsteen fan, I never really liked this song. The acoustic version by Shindell, I like very much. I believe it is on the Songs for Delia album.

How about Punch Brothers doing Wilco's "Poor Places"?

Pretty Cool.

I do acoustic covers of a lot of electric guitar songs.

The two that always seem to get the best response are Born To Run (Springsteen) and Don't Take Me Alive (Steely Dan)
