Boy, that is real nice Steve, that is a lot of detailed work there!!!! Did all the shell cutouts work the first time? Those cuts look so exacting! Nice eccentric design for sure!!!

I love the thoughts, ideals, ideas and emotions behind these choices. An inspiring build so far, and it just keeps getting better!

Speaking of eccentric rosettes, I accidentally ran into this thread:

http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=345844

while reading about apple wood. It shows a Humphrey apple / redwood guitar being made. Check out the rosette!

Default Back Inlay Complete

While the build thread was quiet over the Thanksgiving holiday, there was still quite a bit of activity happening in the Pederson workshop finalizing some of the details for the inlay piece that will anchor the theme of this guitar. Here are some of the photos of this remarkable piece of work from Kevin Pederson.

And finally, the finished work after the detailing work done in the engraving process.

I'm just beside myself with awe, respect, and gratitude for the final product with this piece. I gave Kevin a few simple ideas and what emerged was far beyond what I had imagined. If building a custom guitar and incorporating some intricate inlay is in your plans, there are some incredibly talented people who can make your dreams come true. Kevin Pederson is one of those dream makers.

Default Headstock Inlay

We were also "ideating" about a piece for the headstock... and in keeping with the spirit theme for this guitar, I wanted something to reflect a particular idea representing Holy spirit. Once again, I invited Kevin to allow his creativity to be his guide... I provided a couple of ideas and after a bit of back and forth, this emerged.

First, a couple of concept drawings...

The concept we agreed upon was both emblematic and somewhat iconic. We incorporated several components (dove, ambiguous scene from the opening narrative in the Book of Acts in the Bible, and an image that is a representation of Jesus) to create the headstock scene/inlay.

And, the final of the headstock once the engraving detail has been completed.

As I mentioned with the back medallion inlay, this headstock inlay is another masterpiece work in my opinion. The concept Ideas I offered to Kevin were even less clear than what I suggested for the back inlay and he was able to visualize what I was imagining and push it several levels above my concept.

The pieces are packed up and ready to make their way back down to the Edwinson Shop for some more assembly and a few more surprises. This project has knocked "real" right out of the park.

This has been a really fun project to work on. Inlay is fun to do but I like to build guitars too. I'll do either one or both for you.

There are mother of pearl, abalone shell and recon stone in this inlay.

I added in the little white "glare dots" to add realism. And the engraved detail on the headstock adds a nice touch to it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final product once Steve gets it done.

Have a great day!

Kevin.

This is just fantastic work. Wow, you are doing some amazing work Kevin. What a beautiful job on a tough subject, I mean to work this imagery to the customers satisfaction while not becoming cliche or corny.....that is tough.

Kevin, I'm just over the moon about your masterful artwork here. Not sure if I can even begin to convey my appreciation for your talent.
When Jeff first mentioned that he was thinking of approaching you to ask if you would do some inlay work on the Spirit guitar, I was really hoping you would say yes. Now you have exceeded all of BOTH of our best hopes.
Saying THANK YOU doesn't really convey the depth of gratitude... but THANK YOU, Kevin.
Also, looking forward to seeing what's up next on your workbench...
Good Fortune!
Steve

Mike, Thanks! and for sure all gratitude and awe are due to both Steve and Kevin. This is truly an amazing build coming to fruition.

What I can say, is (in my best Karen Carpenter voice), "We've only just begun..." There are some more great surprises in the pipeline and I can't wait to reveal these as they are incorporated and fleshed out into this marvelous instrument. This is liable to be one of the best Christmas seasons for me ever!

Thanks guys (Steve and Gregg), I can't wait to show what's coming next in the pipeline of the Spirit Guitar! I believe that the back and neck are scheduled to arrive back in Steve's Birmingham workshop, now that Kevin's brilliant work has been completed.

Steve and I have been collaborating on some really cool compliments to Kevin's work that will unify and complete the theme of this very special Edwinson Consort guitar.

Thanks so much for sharing this journey and recognizing the some of the fabulously gifted work of the luthiers in our AGF community. We are a very blessed group of cyber-friends to share in such a talent collective.

Merry Christmas to all!
