Bring money and buy the best. But four or five should get you going. If you have facial hair, be ready for some pain.

I hear that.
I splashed out on this set of Sohne 1847 Lightning and a nifty magnetic harness doodad and I'm all in after an hour trying out Heart of Gold. They sound and feel great.

Those should be nice harmonicas! I'm fond of Hohner Golden Melodies as the full length covers don't snag my moustache, and they usually play with very little breath right out of the box, but I hear good things about those Seydel.

I started playing a few months ago and am having all sorts of fun with it. One thing I like about harmonicas is the price of a top-of-the-line model is about the same as a few sets of Elixers.
I’ve gone through all sorts of Hohners and Lee Oskars and settled on the Golden Melody, as it fits my smallish hands better and is the easiest for me to bend. But I just bought a Seydel 1847 Silver yesterday and am trying it out. A buddy of mine swears by Seydel and won’t use anything else. Beautiful, and obviously well-made. That set should pretty much do you for life, unless you blow like a high pressure hose. And for less than a Mexican Strat. Steven

That's pretty cool!
I have thought of doing the same thing in buying a set of harmonicas. I might just have to do it one of these days! So much of the early Beatles music used a harmonica... - Glenn

Took a harmonica class years ago. Have a full set of harmonicas in all keys.
It's fun but I did not ever get accomplished at playing harmonic.

A harmonica was the first instrument I ever owned, 50+ years ago. I soon learned that it was easier to sound like Neil Young than Sonny Boy, and so I never played much. (I have heard them called "misery whistles".)
But somehow I've accumulated about 10 of the things over the centuries, which represents a pretty good investment. So, I'm going to take a beginning blues harp workshop with Phil Wiggins in a couple weeks and hope he can get me going. D.H. Last edited by Dave Hicks; 07-08-2022 at 01:29 PM. |

Thanks for taking an interest guys.
I enjoyed myself so much during the week I decided to buy a beginners online course and I'm putting aside 30 mins a day in my diary at work to play.

Good call on the Seydels. I've come to them late and am gradually replacing my armory of Special 20s with them. Welcome to the harp side!

Well, I've been having so much fun now I own a chromatic harmonica which I have no particular clue how to play.

I find myself playing chromatic more than diatonic harmonica. It loses some of the characteristic blues harp sounds, but I like the way the note layout is consistent across the whole range, and having all the notes available and behaving consistently. It's expressive in a subtler way than blues harp, too.
