There are so many strings on the market now that I think you should try everything you can and decide what you like.

I would say though, that if you have a guitar based on a 1930s design (say the D-18) then it would have been built originally around heavy gauge brass strings on hex core (80/20s) or medium gauge Monel - because that's all that Martin sold in 1937.

It does surprise me that Martin build the D-18 Authentic to be just like the 1937 D-18 (almost) yet ship it with coated PB strings!!!!! I can't think of anything less authentic regarding the timbre of that particular guitar!
