Are there any videos about Bruce's work other than this one?
https://youtu.be/sGTRSRjziWg

I'm fascinated by his guitars and his style. Amazing!

That last one seems to paint me as a has been (maybe I’m over sensitive) and it is not the actual case.

I hadn’t watched the Kliend find for several years, despite it be linked to the “news” page on my site. I like it just fine, and though it is now 10 years old, it represents my current situation quite well. Interestingly, it was made by by some alternative school system high school kids as their “thesis” project. Gives me hope for the future.

I must be slow, never caught that at all. Maybe because you failed to mention your coffee shop gig? My favorite one has to be 'Better than the Last' though. I just saw it again and I realized there are some good shots of the 'Luthier's Apprentice' (If that is the right name.) that I can use to make my own. It is the videos of Bruce that gave me a better understanding of his work. I had an appreciation of his building and I have taken some methods from his threads but the videos give a greater sense of what Bruce puts into the instruments. Something to aspire to.

Bruce I enjoyed the PBS vid. I hadn’t seen that one before. I definitely didn’t think you came across as a has been! I concur with Fred!

I don't mean to hijack this beautiful build thread, but what are the "giraffe" strips for? I've seen photos of other guitars with different materials used but I'm curious as to why these are put onto a guitar's sides in the first place. Are they braces?

Thank you,
PJ

I refer to them as crack mitigation. In the event of a side crack due to mishandling, the ribbons keep the crack from traveling and potentially ruining the guitar. Selfishly, smaller cracks are Usually easier to repair. My research has shown that interesting yet still fairly conservative ribbons are more fun than plain brown ribbons.

Thank you! I've always wondered why they're there. Just out of curiosity, what are yours made of? I believe those inside my Gibson and Martin are wood but I have no idea what species.

I imagine factory-made guitars need to use a material that can do the job while maintaining their production schedules and the desire to keep costs down/profit margins up.

Thanks again for the explanation and than you also for showing your amazing skill at guitar building.

Mine are polyester ribbon Chosen for its lack of stretch glued with HHG. The wooden strips some use are a classic mistake IMO. Their grain is contrary to That of the sides which creates tension in variable humidity causing either cracked sides at one extreme, or the braces to pop loose at the other creating rattles and buzzes which are difficult to locate.

That's interesting, Bruce, I've been doing vertical wood braces and always feel like it's a bad idea to create a cross grain structure like that. It's only a short distance, but still seems like a risk not worth taking for the potential benefit. I think I will order some ribbon.

Just visit you local Fabric Store. JoAnne's, locally, has a great selection. Some ribbons are stretchy and should be avoided. Natural fiber is tempting, but it can rot over the long haul.

I strung the fiddle I showed you a couple of days ago. I believe it is the best I've done so far. It sound like a violin (can't count on that, believe me) and has a sweetness than makes it hard to put down. I own about 30 fiddles and this seems a rare quality.

Because the commission was for a violin, and I feel this is a bit more of a fiddle, I am about a third of the way through yet another one. Depending on how this one comes out, I will give Ben McKee his choice.
