I don't have a particular genre that I only listen while doing household chores, because household chores are the only time I get to listen to music in the first place (#LifeWithaToddler).

In other words, I listen to whatever I want to listen to in that moment. Last night, it was the vinyl reissue of Gene Clark's "No Other," which was released just last week.

This morning, it was "Me and My Heroes," an awesome fiddle/swing album by Buddy Spicher that I discovered in that same store where I found the Clark LP.

The only time it's based on a decision other than "whatever I feel like" is when I'm cooking. Cooking is more than just something that needs to be done in my house, it's a passion for me-- to make my family creative, delicious, healthy --within reason, I'm no health nut, but for me it's about real fresh food, no sodium bomb boxes or mixes, from scratch stuff. I want my kids eating real food.

Anyway, I get pretty into it. So I like to cook to music that fits the genre I'm cooking. Tonight it'll be the Preservation Hall Band and the NOLA Jazz Vipers. Already looking forward to it.

Now THAT is definitely eclectic.

As the OP who started this thread more than a year ago, I still use Zep's "Good Times, Bad Times" as my default household chore and dishes tune. Did so this morn and listened to it about four times in a row.

I like Greatest Hits of of Van Morrison when doing things I really need to focus on. Relaxing and puts me in a calm state of mind.

A lifetime ago, when I was working as a line cook in a vegetarian restaurant, we weren't allowed to play any ASCAP licensed music because the owner was not willing to pay the ascap fees, but at closing time I would put on my cassette of Nighthawks at The diner and sing along with it as I scrubbed the grill and mopped up.

Years later I met a couple who said part of their decision to move to town was the line cook who sang Tom Waits. They figured it had to be a cool place.

Oh, you mean for work. Anything with lyrics is distracting with I need focus. I have on the Classical station when I am working.

I don't listen to anything while at work. My has on either a 60's station or a 70's station when she is doing anything around the house.

Me, I would rather be playing then listening.

Since I have approximately a hour's drive to and from work I have the XM station Bluegrass Junction on during my commute.

I have a 530-song playlist that I'll put on shuffle mode. The core is 60's and 70's pop and rock, but it's quite an eclectic mix - I've got a little bit of everything in there: classic country, Frank Sinatra, TV Themes, originals, covers from gigs and jam sessions etc etc.. Just for fun, let's turn it on and see what comes up:

Long Distance Runaround, Yes
Paradise, John Prine
Janglin', Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Living in the Past, Jethro Tull
For No One, cover version from a gig
What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong
Get Together, Youngbloods
The Jetson's Theme
Dreamboat Annie, Heart
Lonesome Road, Duane Eddy
In My Life, Beatles
Hurt So Bad, Linda Ronstadt
Ascent, Original
The Lucky One, Alison Krauss and Union Station
I Had Too Much to Dream, Electric Prunes
Kathy's Song, Eva Cassidy
The Pink Panther Theme, Henry Mancini
Everything Reminds Me of My Dog, Jane Siberry
Good Vibrations, Beach Boys

Anyway, that's the general idea. And my chores are now done!
