What does safe mean?

Can you lower the value of the guitar? Yes, easily.

Can you make it so ugly that even you don't want to play it? Maybe. How fussy are you?

Are you fairly experienced in rubbing out different wood finishes? Are you confident that you can cover the entire guitar with the same pressure/angle/coverage so the end result is at least even?

I wouldn't consider such a task, but do what makes you happy.

+1 regarding “safe”.

You will be purposefully damaging the finish. How can that be considered safe?

I don't think there much possibility of anyone getting injured.

You can do a little (scuffing up the gloss) or a lot (sanding down far enough to shoot a new satin finish.) Without some experience in this area, you are probably going to be disappointed in the result. Just curious as to why you want to change the finish?

Take it to a luthier. Have he or she do it.
That is unless, you are prepared to accept the potential for disaster.

That Import Guild has a urethane finish. Urethane is hard as a rock and brittle. Theres really not much you can do with it other than to spray an additional coat of satin urethane over the existing finish. That would result in a thick finish. Leave it alone. Trade it for a satin guitar.

It matters, whether you plan to strip the guitar down and refinish it in Satin, or just add a coat or two of Satin over the gloss. Some will say adding extra finish MAY deaden the response of the wood. It can, but Personally I think it may take more than a couple light coats of Satin.

Are you planning Semi Gloss, or full on Matte ?
