Default More NGD: Seagull Performer Maple Top Cutaway

Today I picked up the maple topped Seagull Performer cutaway with electronics with its generous 1.8" nut width for a winter excursion into fingerstyle, tapping, messing about and pushing myself into new territory. I typically play my J45 for gigging, and country pick so this is a great new space.

In this price range, this guitar really is sweet. There is something ridiculously rich and bright about the maple top. When I strummed it with no pick it almost sounded like a 12 string. It came strung with dirty fingers music store grunge strings, I can hardly wait to see what this will sound like with decent PBs on it.

The action is great out of the box, and Seagull really put workmanship into it, the maple flame is gorgeous. The bass response is particularly satisfying, the J45 rosewood really does not have much of it to speak of. The body design for the performer is unique, there are a bunch of different body widths at different parts of the guitar to enhance the sound and make it a mini jumbo, just a bit more comfortable then a dread.

This is a really sweet guitar made with love, no doubt about it. Its under $1K price tag is reflected in the use of laminate B/S, but the other components are rosewood, tusq, the stuff of good luthiers. It stays in tune absurdly well, after fighting with my beloved J45 for years, this is a treat.

So now for a winter of Candy Rat time! And when I strum it with a pick, its awesome to have all that space to work with. I like it better than the Larrivee L03 which was my last wide neck fingerstyle axe.

I have not tried the pickup yet, I presume it works. That I don't care about, I use the Body Rez and some EQ to clean up quack.

Seagulls, what gems!

That sounds interesting but I didn't know Seagull made a maple topped Performer, I thought they were all sitka topped with layered maple back and sides. Is it a new release?

I've got a Performer Cutaway Dread from a few years ago (probably a 2014) and it's a great sounding and playing guitar that looks fantastic as well.

Now that's a serious Christmas guitar - just slap a red bow on it. I love the back and sides.
