Here's what I do for my students, something like this:

VERSE (C C Am G)4x

CHORUS (Am Am Am E7 F C F G)2x

Each chord symbol represents one measure (whatever the meter). It's very easy to look at the chord symbols and know how long to hold each.

I don't try to align each chord symbol with a certain syllable. That's too confusing. Just write the chords and the lyrics separately.

How do you show two or more chords per bar?

I guess its my old trumpet playing, and piano playing, and chorus and ...

But, I like standard notation.

Standard notation is "real" to me. TAB is a cheap street, low rent, try to get by ..

Standard notation tells me the key signature, the time signature, notes, rests, repeats .. it is, for me, real music.

When someone says they are a musician, and then announces that they can't read music, I'm sorry; but that does not cut it with me. And I don't care how good they are are playing the instrument.

Anyone, who spends just a few hours, can learn to read music.

Thanks! As Jon said there have been too many tied notes (for the sake of the midi sound).
I am about half way through my tabs removing those which will especially help those who
mainly use the standard notation.

I would love some tips on timing, more along the lines of keeping time on improving time keeping in "non-standard" timing such as 3/4 & 6/8.

I am playing twice a week in church after being away from it for almost 30 years. More often than not we have the music sheets that tell me what the timing is, but in my younger years I never learned to keep time by reading, but rather memorized the tunes and played them by ear.

I have no problems with 4/4 but the odd timings throw me off.

I would greatly appreciate any tips you can share. If this should be in a new thread please let me know and I'll do that.

You might look into picking up a metronome that can accent beats, subdivide beats, etc...I use this one.

Does your accentuates more than the first beat? For example for 6/8 would it accentuate the 4 beat as well?

I looked at inexpensive Korg that I have and it does accentuate the first beat, but not others.

With mine (and perhaps yours) I would do so by setting it to accentuate every 3rd beat - the same as you would for 3/4 - you would just count the beats differently, that is:

ONE two three FOUR five six ONE two three FOUR five six

vs.

ONE two three ONE two three ONE two three ONE two three
