Default Grover Sta-Tites are Really Good Tuners!

I always looked at the Grover Sta-Tite tuners as bottom of the barrel, cheapo tuners just based on their price until I got my re-imagined 2017 D-28 with them installed from the Martin factory. They are really good tuners in my opinion. I love the 18:1 ratio too. They are smooth and hold their tuning just fine. Time will tell if they hold up in the long term but, they are certainly cheap enough to replace when needed. Anyway...I like 'em!

I have the 18:1 Grover Sta-Tites on one of my guitars and I have Waverly tuners on another.
Honestly they feel almost identical in how they operate... one is certainly not 3 times better than the other.

Stewmac prices;

Nickel 18:1 Grover Sta-Tites .. $47.70
Nickel 16:1 Waverly ..............$157.18

I replaced the tuners on my Alvarez AP70 with Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite tuners this week. Great improvement. Much smoother tuning.

They are very good. I greatly prefer them to Waverlies.

I replaced the original tuners (one was broken) on my Guild with open back Sta-Tites several years ago and they were a clear improvement over the originals. I have Gotoh open back tuners on my Furch. Both brands look and function extremely well.

Yeah, I never got this whole thing with Waverlys. For me, Grovers have always been the benchmark tuners.

Part of the problem is there are two versions of Grover Sta-tites and the lower-tier Sta-tites are very much "bottom of the barrel, cheapo tuners".

Grover Sta-tite Deluxe tuners are great, and I've been using and recommending them for years. The less expensive Sta-tites with stamped back plates are a much different animal. The Deluxe Sta-tites are around twice the price of the cheaper version.

I wish Grover would quit selling the stamped back plate tuners, it does a disservice to the fine quality level of the Deluxe series.

Retailers who choose to be unscrupulous often don't make it apparent that the "Grover Sta-tites" they are offering at a cheaper price are the lower quality offering.

Grover offers a lifetime warranty, as do most other quality brands. If they stop working, contact Grover. I wouldn't expect them to give you any trouble though.

Yes they are.

Didn't keep me from replacing the Grover Sta-Tites on my Martin OO-15m LAGS Custom with Waverlys,.. but the Grovers are nice for the $$s.

Open Back Grover Sta-tites are great tuning machines. Regular closed back Grover's are boat anchors.

All 6 of the plastic buttons on my Gretsch Alligator resophonic guitar cracked and broke. The tuners were Grover tuners. Grover replaced the tuners under warranty for $7.50 for shipping and handling. The Grover representative said the plastic buttons should not have cracked under normal use. They were replaced with metal butter bean tuners. They stand by their product and had great customer service.

Quick question. Are the tuners with CF Martin engraved on them made by Grover or Gotoh?
