Default Help my Taylor sound better w/ K&K

Hey everybody, I have a wonderful Taylor 410 (Ovangkol) and it sounds AMAZING unplugged. I had a K&K pure mini installed and it sounds compressed, tinny, and very microphonic when strumming hard (I play with a full band at church). Soft strumming and fingerpicking sound natural and nice, so I know it’s not an install problem. It also had plenty of low end.

But hard strumming is very, very harsh sounding.

I’ve tried the K&K preamp and had to put the treble on 0 to remove the buzzy high overtones, but it still doesn’t sound great under hard strumming. I’ve used the LR baggs DI preamp as well without a ton of luck. It’s definitely better than the K&K but still harsh under hard strumming.

I don’t want to get rid of a guitar that plays and sounds great acoustically, but I really need to get a good tone live.

For additional context, our sound guy is great and our church has a very sophisticated audio system (10k+ member church), so I also know it’s not that either.

New pickup? Try more EQ boxes? New guitar?

Dazzo, NV Tone, or add a mic to the K&K (i.e Trinity system). Grace DI?

I’ve just had a Baggs M1 added onto my K&K and it’s made a big difference especially when you dig in. I don’t think there’s really a great deal you can do with the K&K on it’s on unless you start looking at IR’s, Aura etc

Red Eye pre amp. I've had K&K's in about 20 guitars (mostly Martin but also Taylor, Gibson and Eastman) and without fail, using the K&K has improved what already is a great sounding pick-up.

Hi 62caster, do you mean the spectrum aura preamp?

I have and it works well as long as you don't use the images. You still get a good preamp, basic eq and a compressor. The images aren't really designed to work with K&K as I understand it but I have read that some have tried and had some success. Sorry if I misunderstood your question.

Hard strumming is where all piezos meet their match. And K+K seems to output the hottest signal of all SBTs.

The only thing that will let you sculpt that harshness would be a good preamp. I haven't heard glowing reviews of the K+K. People here love the Red-Eye, the Grace boxen, Sunnaudio et al.

ToneDexter is a whole step beyond that. It effectively lets you remove most or all of the piezo artifacts.

+1 to several folks - Grace Design Felix/Alix and Tonedexter are solutions that have worked for me ... I’ve noticed that the TD has become my go to when I play out, mostly because I don’t have to do any tweaking!

Optima Air might be a good alternative to ToneDexter, but I can't be sure.

Easiest fix - for me at least was a RedEye preamp.
Best Tone - ToneDexter (once you record the Irs you like)

That being said, I generally just plug right into my BOSE S1s with no preamp, cut the bass and boost the treble (results in a mid cut as well).

I like the simplicity of the RedEye.

What sort of pickup would match hard strumming? Something like the baggs Anthem? Or Lyric?

I'm not surprised. Had a 324e I like apart from the es2. I didn't like the sound very much. Then it broke down on me just as I was suposed to hit the stage. I got a new es2 installed on the warranty. Next time i got up there a fairly new battery was drained. I'm sure I got lemon but I had given up.

+1 for the Tonedexter. You can really chase your tail trying to nail down down the sound of your guitar acoustically using eq and preamps. The Tonedexter is designed to do exactly what you want and it shines with the K&K's.
