I vote for a wedge, especially since you haven't done one before.

I'd go for Choice #3. This is an experimental guitar, why not experiment? that should give the sound midway between regular OM and your deep body, another experiment. Any of these experiments should turn out well.

Yep, I agree with using the opportunity to try something new. Add one more to the wedge camp!

A lot of great ideas so far, Ryan. As far as woods go, I guess I'd like to see either of the more uncommon ones used but I have faith that you will make anything work well. As far as a new challenge goes, rather than a wedge, you might give consideration to a tummy tuck. I've played exactly one high-end acoustic with one and I've seen pics of one other. Requires a bit of radical use of a hot pipe and a heat gun (I'm told) and some different ideas in back bracing. One thing that surprised me about it was that it pretty much eliminated (or reduced) the need for an arm bevel since the amount of forearm that overhangs the top is increased by the depth of the bend. That's my 2¢ for making your life easier.

Vote one so far:
Eucalyptus : 18 Paldao : 4 Maple : 3 Vote two so far: Wedge : 7 Deep Body : 4 Standard : 1 Let's see Haasome, I'm thinking the wedge will be just a half inch difference from one side to another with the total heel depth around 4 3/8". I don't know how dramatic of a wedge most builders try, but I doubt this will be super noticeable. Hopefully, it will just be a little extra comfort. Thanks for all the people that are trying to give some alternate options. Unfortunately, my two weeks still have other work I have to do besides experimentation, so I'm keeping it with some bounds. Maybe next "Boss is gone again?!?" thread. |

Thanks Jay. I'm not sure I know what a tummy tuck is except that I probably need one. I appreciate all the ideas guys even if I don't respond to each one of them. I try tucking them away in the two neurons I keep open for creativity.
Of course the actual boss would say short scale bass...hmm. I hadn't thought about voting on scale, but I bet we probably could. Let's think about it and maybe I'll make an official one tomorrow. The first day is probably going to be a lot of parts prep for the actual construction. This will allow for some more particular votes. I'm looking forward it. Maybe I'll rub these two neurons together and see what else fun and creative we might be able to do. I'm pretty sure this Sitka/Red Eucalyptus 8 string short scale bass with a Manzer wedge, tummy tuck, arm bevel with implied profane inlay might need a couple more innovations to help it sell. |

Whatever you choose to do, this instrument has got to have an F1 wing like this somewhere:

And....... How short would the scale be on a short-scaled bass if the scale were scaled on the bass? Sorry, I couldn't resist, but my serious question is what would a builder consider to be short scale on an acoustic bass?

Whatever you want!
I might have the shortest scale [12-string] they have built...my experience with Steve and Ryan is that they will build whatever you want!

I like the Paldao best. Standard depth. I think you should make it a 6-string octava-bass. Like a bass only pitched an octave higher, with an added B string and E string. 25.4" scale. I have one of those and I like it.
