I'm sure the mention of ' going to the dark side ' was strictly a figure of speech, not really understanding what that saying means.
I guess, ' Going to the Dark Side ' sounds much better than ' I was wrong ' H102 |

No, it’s not a J45 at all. It’s much too nasty.
I’ve called the DSS-17 a lot of things, this morning I finally found the perfect name; It’s the Telecaster of acoustic guitars!!!!! |

Although I presently don't own a slope shoulder guitar, I have in the past and they can be quite good! I think that, like any type or model, there are good and bad of any type, but I would not hesitate to own a sloped guitar and I may again in the future.
I guess I feel about SS guitars the same as any other, if I find one I really like and I can afford it, I'll buy it. That DSS17 looks quite nice! Not sure how it would fit between my D15 and D18 though. Geesh, I don't know if I even want to try one. I don't need another guitar!!!

Try a Bourgeois Banjo Killer and you’d ask, “What’s a Martin?”!!

.....as one who grew up and joined the Martin ranks in the early seventies I think that some historic perspective is in order...the seventies were not banner years for Gibson acoustic guitars....it’s true Martin wasn’t at the top of their game either but Gibson basically abandoned their flagship design and adopted a poor square shouldered imitation of Martin guitars...sure there are probably some good examples out there but I never played one...Gibson acoustics from the 70’s are routinely overbuilt and unimpressive...
.....so no wonder they fell out of fashion...appreciation for vintage instruments was yet to come for the masses and if you walked into a store to buy a new acoustic there was no comparison between a Gibson and a Martin.... ...I’m not sure when but some time after that...maybe late 80’s or early 90’s Gibson woke up and started making the original design again and slowly worked their way back into the market...(feel free to correct me if my recollection is suspect)...by Y2K they were back and this time folks were interested in the vintage examples as well as the new guitars....that combined with a folk renaissance and the development of the Americana genre has put them up high on the list of popular instruments with a lot of players...no need to extol their virtues...accolades abound... ...and for now the legend and history lives on... Yeah but then what would we call the real Jumbo's? You know...the J-200 style guitars?

I have to ask what you didn’t like about it? I’m still blown away by mine every time I play it.

In my case, no. I was surrounded in L.A. for decades by square-shouldered players. I literally did not know Gibson even had a flat top division till about 15 years ago. I don't own, and have never owned, an electric, so I was only vaguely familiar with Strats and Teles and Les Pauls, so knew very little about those companies. Truth. I'm embarrassed. Scott |
